Congratulations to your mom! They are beautiful quilts. My dear old mom loved quilting and also went to machine quilting in her later years. She made quilts for all her children and grandchildren.

I have to ask, do your mom and sister starch the snowflakes they crochet? I use #10 and sometimes #30 thread and crochet snowflakes, bells and angels. I make a sugar starch for them. My whole tree is decorated almost exclusively with crocheted snowflakes, bells and angels.

There's no place like home
To give you an idea on how long it takes to make a quilt like that: the intricate quilts that my mom would make would take her up to 6 months, and that was working on it almost daily.

She's all excited because she got a new sewing machine. She called a couple of weeks ago to say she's doing her part to help stimulate the economy.

She used to be a "purist" and wouldn't use the machine for the quilting OR the piecework! THAT is some truly amazing work. As she's gotten older (she's 76 now!), she's started "cheating" (according to her). First was using the machine for the piecework. Now it's using the machine for the quilting. But it's all still amazing, as far as I'm concerned.

Your mom is awesome!!!!!!

Amazing work, and many congrats to her for winning, she deserved it. I love quilts. I only have one, made by Mark's Aunt. It was our wedding gift.....each guest signed a little white doilly type piece of material that went on the quilt. It's hanging in my rec room. (here's a not great pic of it: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...tcarpet003.jpg )

My mom crochets as well.... She does xmas ornaments like you (she starches them with a spray starch) as well as table center pieces, placemats, doillies, etc.

I wish I could.... I would love to be able to quilt or crochet. I can cross stich tho

I'll ask. I think they use spray starch?

Chris - that is both beautiful and SO thoughtful!
What a wonderful gift.

That is so awesome! I absolutely love the quilt she won First place for! It's beautifully done and very classic! I'm an artist myself and have always admired quilting, especially those with true love and talent

Such a pretty quilt! And there was a lot of competition! She must be thrilled
My mother just retired and she's gone quilt crazy! I lost out on that gene. I can hardly sew a button on.

I can sew! I know how to read patterns and do all kinds of stuff. I just have no gift for design or colors or anything artistic like that. I'm also pretty sure I don't have the patience for it!

Oh Laurie! Your mom's work is so beautiful -- and I agree with Pami on the one to the left of the ladder, the one that looks like apples to me. They're all gorgeous designs, though, and how I admire that kind of work! Quilting is something I've always wanted to do, and I guess I'm just going to have to jump in and try it one of these days. Your mom has inspired me!

Awww, congrats to your mom! Those quilts are all very beautiful, original, and inspiring. She deserved to win, for sure! It seems to me like she is very talented! Many kudos to your mom. I
quilts. I have a quilt on my bed and an old quilt on my couch. I have always wanted to try quilting but never have. Perhaps I will get a book on it from the library and see what I can make with all the bits of fabric I have.

OH! I totally forgot to tell you - I asked her how long it took to make the quilts. The one in the second picture on the right took altogether "just" six months.

She DID do the quilting on the winner by hand. She's had it for 64 years, but really got to working on it regularly (not daily) to finish it three/four years ago, she's not sure. She'd started the needle work when she first received the gift and it was about 1/4 completed when she started the project again all those years later. The "last bit," the quilting part of it alone (she did do by hand!!!!!) took a year.
