How can I crop a picture to be round?

I know NOTHING about image editing. I have an old version of Adobe photoshop (5.5). I know how to crop and resize and that's pretty much it.

I need to use a picture of a globe in a report - but the image is square, and I want to crop some of the background out to make the picture round. Is there an easy way to do this? Or using some (free) online program or something?
