McDonough, GA Animal Shelter

If anyone lives near here and could help, it would be great. I'm also on a German Shepherd forum, and they were talking about it. The shelter is so full, that cats aren't even lasting long enough to get their ads up. They are being euthanized almost immediately. If anyone knows of any cat rescues near here, or live close by and have room for one (or two) more, it would really help out. When I think about all these preciouses being killed, it makes me sick.

This is, unfortunately, one of the sickening realities of homeless pets. Hundreds upon hundreds of shelter euthanize pets with almost no chance of adoption - as there aren't enough homes for them all, nor enough space at their facility.

"Just one litter", "oops", "I couldn't afford to get her fixed", etc - for every one born, one more already alive dies. Every one you bring into this world kills another.

Yeah, those are all LAME excuses. When I rescued two kittens, it really wasn't a great time for me financially. AT ALL. One found a home the first day at the rescue that took them. Then there was the other kitten. She was shy, abused, neglected...No one wanted her, and I couldn't see her sitting in a cage waiting anymore, so I stepped up. I became not only her rescuer, but also her foster mom. I fell in love, and the whole foster thing, just wasn't working. I adopted. Then I found a spay/neuter program that only charged me $20 to spay her. After that, I told everyone I knew who acted like they couldn't afford the surgery about it, and took in a couple ferals myself and got it done. People need to understand the importance of spay/neuter. Millions and millions of animals are murdered every year, and it makes me sick. It's not the shelters fault, but irresponsible owners. I have a purebred german shepherd puppy with awesome lines. A lot of people tell me, "Oh, you should definitely breed her someday and you'll make a lot of money!" Her spay surgery is next week, haha.

I work at a shelter that euthanize. We had a German Shepherd come in. She was gorgeous! She was microchipped so we contacted her owner. When he came to pick her up he said she slipped her collar (that she was tied out to) and jumped the fence. I said I hoped he found a way to keep her in, that she is so pretty someone might find her and keep her. He said it wouldn't matter if they did, he had her dad and would just make more. I couldn't help but reply with a snide, "That will help the overcrowding in shelters."

FYI, I'm right down the road from you. The shelter I work at can't take outside animals and they euth. anyway. I know for a fact that our local rescues are full or I'd be glad to connect you. I'd even drive to get the cats and bring them here. If anything changes I'll PM you.

Boy are you singing the same song as me! It breaks my heart in two to know just how many animals - cats especially - are destroyed each year b/c of irresponsible and lazy people who can't do a little internet research or make a couple of calls to find a good price to fix their animals... and people like us have to clean up the mess.

I am fostering for the first time - I have avoided it b/c I was afraid I would get attached - and I am falling in love with these guys. I have no resident pets so I took four cats at once! Three are very sociable and are already hanging out together. The fourth is frightened, timid and shy. He is separated in a bathroom. I go in there and lay on the floor and coax him out from underneath the cabinet... He is sooooooooo affectionate it's unbelievable. And he's gorgeous - diluted colors of grey and cream and white with blue eyes.

OMG that is so sad I wish I could help, I'm in that area Im going to talk to my parents because I live with them but I am sure they will say no and possibly even get angry at me for even considering it. I will ask my friends though and see if they have room and are willing to take some kitties. I know one of my friends wanted to adopt a cat but the cost of adoption was too much for him. Is there still an adoption cost since the shelter is overcrowded?
