I have two Egyptian Maus. One loves attention, he would do just about anything for it.

My other cat however just doesn't want bothered most of the time. He loves to cuddle and be pet...but only if I am lying down in bed. Any other time I try to even touch him he freaks and runs under the bed. This just doesn't make any sense to me.

Any ideas???

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Just like people, some cats are shy, though when it comes to animals, we tend to use the word "skittish."

Give this a try - the next time you want to pet him when you're not in bed, try lying down on the floor first near him, and slowly reach out your hand palm down. Does he still freak?

Is he purchased from a breeder or a rescue kitty? How long has he been with you?

You are big, (in a cat's mind) he is small, standing over him is a percieved threat. That is why he is fine with you laying down, less threat. A snoozing human is a safe human.
Get down on his level, lay on the floor, roll, stretch, be cat like. He will eventually understand you are not out to hunt him.

I had a stray female who adopted me when she was about a year old. We lived together for 18 years, and she hated most people. She would only be petted on HER terms--e.g., if I were sitting in a chair, her cue to me would be to come and stand right next to the chair. I would lean down and pet her, and when she'd had enough, she would just walk away. She slept with me most of the time, but rarely came into the bed until I was asleep.

This was just her personality, and we did just fine together.
