woluld you take on a kitten?

It's bad to split them up, IMO, as they need other kitties to learn from. I also don't think "average joe" is going to know what they're getting into. You don't just bottle feed them, you have a tiny infant who must be fed every few hours - 24/7. They cannot even poop on their own.

Maybe someone could take them in pairs or 3 at a time, it is a lot of work but they do need kitten companionship.
