I was petting Maia's tummy tonight and noticed small black dots around her nipples. She wouldn't let me investigate thoroughly, but it's not normal, I know that much! She's a tabby so it's difficult to spot things such as fleas, but I'm not sure what it is. She is a strictly indoors only, but it is that time of year so I put a flea collar on her just in case. Needless to say she isn't so happy about it, she's acting like I put weights around her neck
. She is collar and harness trained, it's just been a while

Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

don't know about the spots, but don't use that flea collar on your cat. I've heard of many cases of cats getting sick from flea collars. Plus they only work around the collar. Ask any member around here, they'd tell you to take it off immediately. That stuff nearly kills some cats.

I'm not rich by any means (I work and go to college full time except for the summer), but I still would rather buy Advantage from the vet or nothing at all. If you want to be cheap, I believe you can get away with applying it more than a month apart and yet more effective than the garbage they sell you in the store. Trust me, I've had fleas before (in a different house), but with the exception of the few I've found on a kitten too young to put in on, I've never seen a flea in the house. Best money you will ever spend. It doesn't have to be Advantage. Just anything approved by your vet.

Your right, I normally wouldn't use a flea collar, I just know how fast it can get out of hand. I to have had flea problems, actually from the last time Maia was at the vets! I already took it off. But am concerned about the spots, they definitely are on the surface and tiny. I am going to speak to my vet tomorrow........If anyone has any idea what it could be, please fill me in!

Have no idea what the problem might be, but please remove the flea collar immediately... It can be very dangerous to your kitty. The best use is to cut it and toss it into the vacuum bag/canister.

Can you get pictures of the spots? It's really hard to tell from your description.

I would love to, but it's just her and I. I have to push her golden fur aside to see it while she is lying on her belly, and shes just not having it!

I got a couple of pics! I don't know how much they help but hopefully........

SOme people may think it's a bit of dirt, but this girl is a super clean freak! SHe is just over three years old and I have never seen this before, and believe me I would have noticed, shes my little girl!
It's only around a couple of nipples, the front ones are still pink and clean.......

Fortunately it is not a total waste of your money, you can cut it up and put the pieces in your vacuum bag.

Looks like it might be fleas or flea dirt.... do they move? or wipe off?

Let us know what the vet says. You got me curious now too.

Rocko has these around his nipples too. He has NEVER had fleas. It's dirt as far as I am concerned. Probably from the litter adhering to the skin and than with the combo of litter and sweat it turns into little dirt flecks. JMO.

Definitely have the vet check it out. It sort of looks like she may have been over grooming them/biting them/sucking on them, which might mean that they are irritating her in some way. It could be nothing--just a pigment change in that area--but it's definitely worth checking out.

hmmm, I wouldn't know. Maybe just discoloration of her nipples? But as for the fleas, if they do come back, nothing beats the professional exterminators.
We tried using flea foggers and almost everything else out there, but it wasn't until Orkin flea bombed the entire place that they finally died off. And that was before using Advantage. Never saw another flea in my life again until the few I found on TC. But I haven't seen any for weeks.

Everyone worries about their pets

It's nothing to do with fleas, trust me. I think it's just an age thing too because my 6 month old doesn't have them

Sorry for posting in a old thread but I'm looking for information about a similar issue

But unfortunately I can't really see the pictures posted at all.

How could I differentiate fleas dirt or normal pores or "normal dirt"?

I found this really tiny specks next to nipples in one of my one year old male cats. First I was alarmed thinking about fleas but they took Comfortis (with a really awful vomiting reaction in the beginning of the month). After more observation I found I couldn't really take one of the little black spots so I could do the red test It's almost they are tiny blackheads?

If you could give me any help it would be much appreciated!

thanks in advance

They MIGHT BE something like blackheads.  Maybe THIS thread will be more helpful:  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/294931/black-spots-around-my-male-cats-nipples
