A mommy cat and her three kittens came into the shelter where I work the day before yesterday. I wasn't there when they came in but when I got there the clinic staff (it's a vet clinic/shelter kind of unique situation where I'm pretty much the shelter staff) told me that a feral with kittens had come in. The kittens looked to be about 6 weeks so I made the executive decision to separate them from their mother in the hopes that I could socialize them better that way and give them a shot at adoption. With the mom being feral her time would be short as we're not no-kill.
So, I split everyone up and said let's see what happens. Later in the day I heard one of the cats meowing at me. It was the mother cat asking for food. Hello? A feral calling out to me? That didn't seem right. I talked to her and she came right to the front of the kennel and began kissing the bars. I reached in to pet her and who would have thought? The cat did a total 180 and isn't feral AT ALL! I think moving those kittens saved all their lives.
Another happy note! The kittens are on the fast track to socialization!
