We have 2 kittens which I guess are about 12-14 weeks old, one male one female. When we first had them they both were happy to use the litter tray, but now one of them (not sure which) is urinating out of the tray and unfortunately has used the sofa three times.

Can anyone advise on this problem please?

Have you restriced the kittens to a small room/area? 12-14 weeks is still very young and they are still learning to use the litter tray

What I don't understand is that they behaved quite well to start off with. It is only recently that they have started to do this. It seems to happen at night when they are confined to one room with the litter tray.

Do you confine them at night or during the day? Is the litter tray in the same place at all times and if you have been letting them out of the room, are there multiple litter trays?

They are not confined during the day but have easy access to the litter tray. The out-of-litter-tray episodes have happened in the same room as the litter tray.

Could be one is bullying the other out of using the tray... could be one or both have urinary tract infections - that is usually the first line culprit in a change in #1 habits. take them to the vet to be checked ---- get Nok-out or Anti-Icky Poo to get the pee scent out of whatever they pee'd on ... may need a black light to find it all. Even if YOU can't smell it--- THEY can.

You may also need TWO trays.... rule of thumb is one tray per cat.. and sometimes an extra --- some do #1 in one pan and #2 in a second one.

You will see how things shake out there.

Get another litter pan. And get some Cat Attract Litter to use. You need to use a lot of Nature's Miracle cleaner to get rid of the smell/odor on the couch.

I confine my kittens for about 4-5 months to one room when I can't watch them. Otherwise they are supervised when out exploring.
