Over the river and through the woods...
DH was outside cutting grass and I was inside doing laundry. He suddenly runs in and tells me a greyhound just ran down the dirt road (dog, not bus)! We went back out to find her, and after about 5 minutes she came out of the woods and walked right up to us. She was a beautiful brindle color and the sweetest dog! Since she was definitely winded we got a bowl of water and she drank every last drop. On her collar there was a tag from a greyhound rescue from down state so we called and got the phone number for her owners. The woman at the rescue said she belonged to an elderly couple so I called them. The poor woman started crying when I told her that her baby was safe and sound and with us.

I found out from the woman at the rescue that the dog's name was Ladybug, and she was a complete lady while she was with us. I wasn't sure how she reacted to other dogs so I didn't put her in the yard with my four; instead I kept her on a lead but she was too tired to run anymore. Her owners live on the next mountain over, which is probably a 6-8 mile drive if you use the roads, but there are old hunting trails through the woods that connect the two so we figure that's what she took.

The look on her sweet face when she recognized her owns' car coming down the road was priceless...she was SO excited! And the couple was as sweet as could be. They have a 15'X15' outside kennel/run for her and the woman said one minute she was there and the next time she looked out she was gone. They figure she may have jumped the fence to chase something (they are now planning on getting a higher fence!). They've had her for 2 years and this is the first time they had any problem with her getting out. She's a retired racer (6 years old) and yesterday was such a gorgeous day she probably was just in high spirits. Needless to say neither I or DH got much done yesterday!

The best thing....I have visitation rights!!!

Oh, I LOVE greyhounds! I didn't know much about them until my cousin adopted a retired racer from a greyhound rescue. The poor thing didn't even know how to play when they first got her. It just amazed me how well behaved she was. Even with the barn cats coming around (dinner for them was late waiting for her owners to come) she didn't even bat an eye at them. That surprised her owners too....apparently she normally tries to chase cats at home, but I guess she was too tired or the surroundings were too new for her to be "herself".

I can't wait to go see her again! Lots and lots of treats!!

Oh, I know! I'm kicking myself now for not grabbing my camera but I didn't want to leave her alone. And DH had to go to the end of our dirt road to flag her owners down because they passed the turn off twice.

I had the pleasure of owning a retired racer for 11 years. Her name was Cleo and she was the ultimate couch potato. Always at her sweet best. She LOVED marshmallows, btw.

That's what Ladybug's owners said...she's a major couch potato, and she sleeps 23 hours a day. I guess she got all the excercising out of her when she was racing, now she just wants to relax. I'll keep in mind the marshmellows, but I got to get the ok from her mommy and daddy.

What a nice surprise visitor! I'm so glad that you were about to easily locate her owners. She sounds sweet, like most greyhounds I"ve met.
