What is Cat Grass? Should I use it?

Hi everyone!

I've had my little girl for almost three years now, and since she's my first cat, there are many things I feel like I still need to learn. One of the things I've been wondering about lately is cat grass. I see it for sale in pet stores and grocery stores, but I don't really know what it's for, or how to use it, or anything else about it.

Please explain to me what cat grass is and what it does for cats. Also, is it recommended for all cats? I have a domestic short-hair. And lastly, is there a specific brand that's good?

I sell cat grass seeds on eBay, my cats LOVE it and it not only helps their digestive systems and gives them nutrients, but it helps them from having too many hairballs.

as GingersMom already mentioned cat grass it used for hairball control. Basiclly cats love to chew on long strands of grass like it were spaghetti Most cats like to eat grass as it helps them dislodge fur balls in their stomach.

It is also thought that cats eat grass if they require folic acid (Vitamin B9).

As mine are indoor/ outdoor cats I don't really buy any- but I see them quite regularly (every few days) go for a nibble, which looks quite funny because my boy is what you call a cow cat- back and white.

Anyway- you could grow a bit of lawn in a flat planting thingy to lay on if you have a balcony.

The "cat grass" sold in shops is often simply wheat or barley, so it may be cheaper to buy a big bag of wheat seeds from a pet shop (.... in the bird department ) and sow some out every now and then- it should grow fairly fast and you don't exactly need a green thumb .

Some people prefer to buy Cyperus alternifolius instead.

Another plant useful here is Chlorophytum comosum (spider-plant?).

Cats are gladely chewing it merrily throwing afterwards

Easy to grow and maintain. This plant is also said to be good at cleaning your indoor air.

hmmm, I did not know that.... here I was, shooing Kizzy away from my spiderplants... not that i really want him to eat them, but its good to know that if he does that it might be good for him.

I'm not sure what brands I got, but I got them at Target or Walmart. It's in the cat food/toy aisle. I think one of them made by Smart Cat. It comes with a bowl of soil, seeds and lid. It's very easy to grow and both my boys like it. I have some pics of them grazing like little cows in my living room but I haven't uploaded them yet. It's lasted about 2 weeks so far and hasn't wilted yet. I might try growing myself sometime.

A big 'thank you' to everyone who helped me!! I am definitely going to look into getting my little girl some cat grass. Maybe I'll start with the kind they already sell at the store, and then look into the possibility of growing it myself.

You can probably do as you wish.

but if you let it be, growing up in their little plate, or whatever they grew in, so the cat can reach it,  the cat will intinctively know what it is, and chew off some.

I pull bits off and hand feed it to them (we dont have anywhere really to leave it down all the time)

However we do have a spider plant in the bathroom and they both make a beeline for that when ever the bathroom door is opened !!
