I think I may need to take Bodhi to the vet. He seems to be acting his usual self; however, in the past couple of months he has had some episodes of loose stool which gets mushed into his hind-end fur. He is extremely fluffy back there and won't hardly let me get near him with scissors to trim him very well. So, I've been trying to keep a maintenance check going each day and just sort of feeling around back there to make sure no poop is stuck in the fur. Well, I've noticed that he seems to have either a big matted ball of fur right beside his anus or it's something else. I try to squeeze on it a little bit and it almost does have a fluid-filled consistency to it, but nothing ever comes out. Bodhi gets a little irritated at this point and runs away. Short of taking some clippers to his rear end, I don't know how to find out what is going on back there. I really would like to have him clipped professionally - would a vet do that or would I have to take him to Petco or a groomer?

Any ideas or thoughts about what this could be are greatly appreciated.

You need to have the vet do a "sanitary shave" on him. That, of course, will look funny, but it will help him.

It's not impossible that he might have infected or impacted anal glands.

Vets will usually do sanitary clips (or "potty paths" as I like to call them), which will help your boy with his messy bottom. It could be an anal gland issue or something else. A lot of times pancreas issues are misdiagnosed as anal gland problems, so you might want to consider getting some BW run as well to let you know if there are any red flags.

Thanks for the replies... I am going to definitely take him to the vet on Saturday morning. I can't get a regular appointment, but they do "walk-in" hours on Saturday from 7am to noon. I'll get there super early and get him checked out. I also definitely want to do a bloodwork panel since he is 8 years old. Want to be sure he's healthy.

Thanks again everyone... I will be sure to update with what the vet says on Saturday.
