Gaw! This makes me soooooo mad!!!! I cruise some of the local shelters web sites... and looking at the 'strays' section, four tiger kittens were dumped in the drop box at an Auto Zone store!

Not even a PET store!!!!

And they are not safe yet - they were taken to the local county animal control, where they will be for a week as strays (for someone to claim them, HAH!) and then ONE WEEK to find a home. This is the same county pound I was complaining about before....

Man that just stinks!!!!

And this shelter does not work with rescues. Rescues have to pay the same fees as the public to get these animals to safety.

No wonder you were complaining about them. I've never heard of a county shelter that won't let local rescues pull kitties from it! They have to pay the same fee? What's wrong with them?!?!?!

Have you already contacted the Township or County about this practice? Seems to me they should have some sway over the policies of the shelter.

for the kitties.

That's just it. The county commission likes it this way b/c the shelter makes money for the county and from what the local rescues tell me, the shelter director has them in her back pocket. So, the only way to affect policy change would be a large and sustained public outcry .... or a petition drive, put something on the local ballot,etc.. Get the commissioners where it hurts -- right in the politics.

Otherwise it's just business as usual.

I had to check where you lived - it sounded so familiar! Our SPCA charges between $75 and $130 per cat brought in. In 2007, they killed 2437 cats. Do the math!

The only good news is - our largest city is now reconsidering the trap and kill concept - it obviously isn't working. After three decades, there are more ferals than ever. Hopefully, they will see the light and at least try a TNR program.

OK, where we used to live the local shelter would let rescues and rescuers pull cats - but the head of the shelter got busted for breeding and selling the pure bred rescues!
