At Walmart,I had a tough time deciding on which brand to buy. I chose Iams Healthy Naturals,it has the pictures of fish, vegetables, rice, and apples on the bag.

If I made a mistake in buying this bag,I'll try to go to either PetCo,or Petsmart to buy the right foods for Roke.

This is the ingredients list for the food you got... I wouldn't feed my cats with it, as I personally stay away from by-products and corn... There is a lot of corn in this food, and the main protein source in there is chicken by-product meal.

Chicken, chicken-by-product meal, corn meal, chicken meal, salmon, brewers rice, ground whole grain barley, corn grits, dried beet pulp, dried egg product, natural chicken flavor, sodium bisulfate, potassium chloride, animal fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a source of vitamin E), dl-methionine, dried apple pomace, dried carrots, brewers dried yeast, dried peas, vitamins (vitamin E supplement, vitamin A acetate, niacin, ascorbic acid, calcium pantothenate, biotin, thiamine mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), pyridoxine hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, riboflavin supplement (source of vitamin B2), inositol, folic acid), chloine chloride, dried spinach, dried tomato, calcium carbonate, minerals (zinc oxide, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, cobalt carbonate), rosemary extract

From everything I have heard and read, Iams is mediocre food. But I am far from an expert.

What about Purina Pro Plan? I am posing this question to the food and nutrition experts on here. I feed the chicken and rice wet as a treat to my rescue cats. It seems to be the universal favorite. (We have to feed the cats Authority dry b/c that's what Petsmart donates.)

(It's also a dry (air) environment in the store - so I figure any decent wet I can give to the kitties there or get them to eat is a good thing.

Chicken this is meat and bone from the chicken but it is 66% water as ingredients are listed raw , chicken-by-product mealconcentrated heads , feet and intestines ( yes cat need organs but this is mystery meat ), corn mealcorn helps with UTI health but it is hard to digest, chicken mealthis is chicken and bone minus the water IMHO a better choice for a first ingredient as it has the water removed , salmon same as chicken in this case not alot of salmon in this food , brewers ricethis is Low quality rice fractions so you dont know if you are getting the whole grain or not , ground whole grain barleycan be an allergen as it shares a gluten with wheat a common one , corn gritsMORE corn this is basically a cheap way to add some not very digestible protein, dried beet pulpdue to processing this is a possible allergen , dried egg product, natural chicken flavorcan be nearly anything, sodium bisulfateI am fine with this if it is within the LAST three ingredients it is a chemical , potassium chloride, animal fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a source of vitamin E)WHO , dl-methionine, dried apple pomace, dried carrots, brewers dried yeast, dried peas allergens , vitamins (vitamin E supplement, vitamin A acetate, niacin, ascorbic acid, calcium pantothenate, biotin, thiamine mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), pyridoxine hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, riboflavin supplement (source of vitamin B2), inositol, folic acid), chloine chloride, dried spinach, dried tomato, calcium carbonate, minerals (zinc oxide, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, cobalt carbonate), rosemary extractcan cause tummy trouble

OVERALL this is IMHO not a decent food

Pro plan is IMHO usually not a good food ... the dry normally is grain filled and chicken by product filled and the wet food has artificial colors in many formulas ... some have digest also

Authority IMHO is far far better and it only gets a decent in my book

Per www.proplan.com

Chicken mostly water, brewers rice, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal, dried egg product, wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), fish meal, soy protein isolate, animal liver flavor, brewers dried yeast, potassium chloride, phosphoric acid, salt, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, calcium carbonate, choline chloride, Vitamin E supplement, taurine, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, copper sulfate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite.

Hmmmm... that is interesting, b/c I think the rescue I volunteer for feeds Pro Plan across the board -dogs and cats. So it's out of my hands. I know with the wet, I try all different kinds and b/c it is out of my own pocket, I often buy what's on sale of the moderate to good stuff. I only do this once a week. I don't think I could convince the powers-that-be to change to something else. But when I get cats of my own, I will certainly come here for advice on feeding them.

Don't mean to hijack the OPs thread, but if I could convince them to change, given the financial constraints... what would be a good cat dry?

I looked at Walmart's website, but they don't have Pro Plan.

Is the GoodLife brand a good choice?

authority ingredients:
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Ground Corn, Animal Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Natural Flavor, Beet Pulp, Dried Egg Product, Canola Oil, Corn Oil, Potassium Chloride, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2 Polyphosphate, Niacin, Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamin Mononitrate, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Minerals (Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Dicalcium Phosphate, Taurine.
i'd post Maxximum, but Wal-Mart's website is being wonky

anyway, GoodLife is mainly corn, not a meat. price-wise, Authority [just bought some yesterday!] is about $25 for 20 pounds - so less expensive, but better quality, since main ingredient is a meat meal, not corn [altho it's fairly grainy].
compare both to something like Taste of the Wild, a grain-free kibble:
Chicken meal, peas, sweet potatoes, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), potato protein, roasted venison, smoked salmon, natural flavor, ocean fish meal, methionine, taurine, choline chloride, dried chicory root, tomatoes, blueberries, raspberries, yucca schidigera extract, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces cerevesiae fermentation solubles, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, vitamin E supplement, niacin, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), vitamin A supplement, biotin, potassium iodide, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin (vitamin B2), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, manganous oxide, sodium selenite, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

I feed Iams Healthy Naturals and my cats are doing very well on it. We did switch to Salmon instead of Chicken, my senior eats it better. We've tried all the healthy stuff out there, and it ended up returned or donated to the shelter. My cats like and do well on Iams, so that's what I feed for dry food.

No, just the opposite... you are trying VERY hard to be a GOOD cat owner!!

So the qualifier here is to buy the best quality dry you can afford that the cat will EAT!

That's the truth!!! Cats are sooo picky. With my dogs I can just pick a food I think is good and they'll eat it, but with the cats I have to consider what THEY like, too.

Personally, I feed my cats Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul. Here's a store locator--- http://www.chickensoupforthepetlover...ealer_locator/ Sometimes you can find the best pet food stores by doing a store search on the better foods. Felidae is another good food that isn't sold at the big-box pet stores; http://www.canidae.com/company/storelocator.html

If you're stuck with Wal-Mart, I think Maxximum is really a decent food. Purina ONE would be my second Wal-Mart pick. At PetCo I'd get Natural Balance or Solid Gold, at Petsmart I'd get Blue Buffalo Spa Selects. (My picks only, not saying they're the BEST)

authority ingredients:
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Ground Corn NOT IMHO okay in same formula , Animal Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Natural Flavor, Beet Pulpthe ingredient is a great probiotic the issue is with how it is processed causing allergies , Dried Egg Product, Canola Oil, Corn Oildecent fatty acids but there are better options IMHO, Potassium Chloride, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2 Polyphosphate, Niacin, Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamin Mononitrate, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Minerals (Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Dicalcium Phosphate, Taurine.

Blue= IMHO a good ingredient that most will do well with

Orange = Some do fine others dont or one that is generally accepted but my research has led me not to think is a blue level

Magenta or pink= IMHO something to avoid , could be as simple as unknown source

If you really want to stick with buying at Walmart, I would suggest Purina Naturals. Of course it's not the "best" but it is a decent food, and I think better then what your feeding and better then the IAMS.

I can't tell you how many labels I have read. I have looked up the ingredints, on Ask.com. I have had icky gassy cats, runny poop, and a LOT of stool samples done. I found IMO, a good quality food has no by-products, no beef, cus it is hard to digest, brown rice or oats, NO corn or glutens. All of mine are sassy, big cats. I feed dry, except for 2 times a week I put a can of wet down. The wet is wellness, or merrick, or something of higher quality. But I had to find what would work for me & mine. I had my sweet old girl on Fancy Feast, that's ALL she would eat, she loved it. I know now it wasn't the best. She died of kidney failure. But I had her 12 years. I hope to have my babies that long. But as much as food is important. Keeping a cats mouth and teeth healthy is REALLY important, I am doing a better job with the 4.

I like to feed my cats Felidae, but have recently started mixing that with Taste of the Wild... I feel better about feeding them something grain-free. I also feed Sheba premium cuts dome wet food. The ingredients are IMO amazing, as is the visible quality, and everyone loves the taste of it.

I find that in regards to dry foods, Felidae and/or Taste of the Wild are great qualities for price for me. They are wonderful because they're formulated for all age/life stages, which is perfect for my multi-cat, multi-age household...

I'd recommend Felidae, but I don't think any of the big-named chain stores carry it.
