What is one thing you'd save if your house was on fire?

I have a fire safe box for important papers but if you lose those papers, you can always send away for them for a fee. I had to do it for a birth certificate and it wasn't that bad.

After making sure all are safe, there isn't much that can't be replaced except for my purse (with car keys and debit card) and a wall picture of my dad I'd have to have since he just passed away 3 months ago.

if i wasn't wearing it, i'd save my grandmothers wedding set [engagement & wedding ring - a replacement set my grandfather gave her on their 25th anniversary]. if i was wearing the rings, i'd save the portrait of my paternal grandfather that my dad had painted for his mother [also inherited].

One thing?

I'd probably grab a suitcase and frantically fill it to the brim, grab my purse and hope I'm not stupid enough to go back in and try to grab more.

However, if I HAVE to grab one thing/theme of things, it would be all my artwork. I lost all of it once in my life, and it was like losing a limb. Everything else I lost I've never missed as much as that.

My mum has one of those, currently I keep my papers in hers since she lives close by.

There isn't really anything I would save beyond the cats.

The only inanimate thing I'd save would be Joshua's ashes/memorial box.

In a state of insanity :)
Ok seeing as our house caught fire in feburary last year from a lighting strike. I managed to get out my pocketbook which had the important papers like drivers license and ssc and money.
We also managed to get all three birds and both cats out. Chynna was a worry for us because the big bang that cause the fire scared her and she went under the bed. She wouldn't come out when callled so was left behind. When daylight came she come around the corner of what was left of the house crying. So she made it out safe somehow. We think the fireman scared her out or she got out when the birds were removed. The goldfish we had was in the front of the house and missed most of the fire damage just smoke and heat got that part and the firemen added water to aquarium to keep fish from boiling.

The one thing that I wanted to make sure that I got out was a bag of undeveloped film. This bag was right beside me and missed it in rushing out the door away from fire. The film was latter found and it is a big blob of melted together film canisters. I am pretty sure that nothing can be got out of them.

There's no place like home
My house also caught fire one time. I threw my purse and laptop out the door onto the front lawn then went to put the fire out. My purse had my car keys, cell phone, wallet with all the important things in a wallet. I would have liked to save some of my mom's jewelry, but I wouldn't risk my life for it.

I can't really think of any one single thing I would save. However I would probably be too busy getting all my pets our anyway so I wouldn't have time... Between my dog, 7 cats, 2 rats, my Sugar Gliders and pet frog I doubt I'd have time to grab anything else.

Mine would be my cats ashes - Lolly & Garfield's. I would of course have the 6 furry babies out and that would probably take all my time. While I was running out the door I would probably just grab the mat or the air freshner by the front door just so the fire didn't claim everything! Oh and I'd be tempted to go and drive out our 69' Camaro which is parked in our internal access garage.

aside from saving my cats. (the carriers are in my bedroom ready at a notice even though i know in a pinch I can throw the two of them into the soft duffel bag type carrier if I didn't have time to fuss with the hard crate)

Aside from that I would prob. grab my bible which has alot of sentimental items stuffed inside...like the Halloween card my grandfather made for me 2 weeks before he died. (he was a great artist) and my flute since it is a custom hand made instrument that is literally one of a kind and made to my exact specifications so not easily replaced. But none of that matters if I only have time to save my family and cats.

Besides the people and the cats, the only things I'd try to grab are a couple of pictures hanging on the wall that have very significant sentimental value to DH.

As long as all the animals are safe, I would grab my grans picture along with the pictures of my best friend who passed away along with his CD. I keep these all in a cabinet right by my door just in case this ever happens.

as long as me, BF the cats and turtle were safe and i had a chance to grab something it would be my purse since it has all my id, atm cards, things like that. theres a photo album right underneath my kitchen table that has alot of memorable pics so if i had time id grab that too.

we have a deadbolt lock on the house, and 1 thing that makes me nervous is that to even get out of the house we would have to fiddle with the keys to open the door and i can see that making me panik big time.

Is there a window near the lock? If not, you could change the key bolt to a thumb bolt where it's keyed on the outside but has a knob you twist to (un)lock on the inside. If it is near a window they also make removable thumb bolts which might be easier to grab and get into the lock than finding a key on a ring.
