This is an update on my 14 y.o. kitty Peaches who has a sore on her haunch that she won't heal. She's had it for a year and a half... test results show she's mostly healthy and has no cancer. The vet says there's a lot of blood flow to the area and that's why it won't stop bleeding. They don't know what to do short of amputating her leg... (we won't do that). I realize that I also named this thread "She won't LET it heal" that's not the case. It just won't heal.

We put her on antibiotics and she didn't heal at all. We had a cone on her head for almost 6 mo. trying to get it to heal, but nothing helps... We cleaned it and put on an antibacterial cream that the vet gave us... so the last couple months we've been bandaging it up every week and washing it. Today we tried to take it off and it looks like it's bleeding already, or maybe it was on too tight and it cut into her leg (I hope that's not it... that thought breaks my heart...)

I am so heartbroken .... we've tried everything and now honestly it seems like the only thing we can do, is put her down... she's very uncomfortable... although she seems pretty happy and healthy otherwise. My parents are at their wits end and don't want to clean up the blood anymore...

At this point I don't know what to do? What would you do? Is it wrong for me to want to try and keep her alive regardless? My parents seem to think it's cruel...

That is exactly what I was thinking. It's odd that the skin won't grow back, I've always thought the more blood flow the better the chance of healing?

I agree with the others. That's odd.

Maybe this is a strange suggestion, but since it's on a back leg what about some sort of odd kitty pants? But more like chaps - so that she could still pee and poop.

Kitty pants! That's a very interesting idea!! I'll look into that.

I'm taking her to a new vet tomorrow, but my friend suggested super glue like they used during wars. I won't try it without talking to the vet first of course. Has anyone heard of using this on kitties?

I absolutely would not do that.

I just caught this thread, but agree with the others to ask for a second opinion. Skin issues that don't heal can be as simple as allergies aggrevating a wound spot. I had a chronic allergy kitty (skin lesions) that cleared up with antibiotics and steroids. This may not be the case with your cat, but a new vet might explore the cause of her problems further than your old vet did.

Good luck at the vets tomorrow!

I am a horrible mother.

Her sore looks so painful... I feel so, so awful...

The new vet finally told me something I can use, rather than "There's nothing else to do." This is the 4th vet she's seen so this has been a long time coming. We have to see a specialist who will tell me whether or not it can be treated surgically, or if she is even healthy enough to handle surgery... Her sore is beyond just a sore, it involves deep tissues and bone...

How could this happen?? How could it get so bad... That's rhetorical as I know I won't know any more until I see the specialist who can answer my questions.....

Unfortunately, not all vets are created equal and it seems like you just didn't get a good one until now. I'll keep you and kitty in my thoughts and prayers that they can resolve her problem and she will heal and get better.
