I have a 9 almost 10 year old female cat. She never wanted to play when she was a kitten and since I PTS my Peri last September (they were around the same age but not litter-mates...they never really got along just tolerated each other
.)

Lauren's been playing quite a bit. She's even lost a bit of weight (a small concern because of her age but she's more active now...she seems quite healthy other than the occasional hairball) she was a bit pudgy before she got all this playfulness. I was just wondering if anyone else had/has an older cat that rarely/never played that all of a sudden grabs a toy and goes wild with play

Don't get me wrong I'm very glad she's active now but it was such a surprise to me.

It's great that Lauren's playing more now. I have a little guy at home near her age and I practically have to stand on my head to get him to play! He's definitely not easily amused!

The only thing that worries me a little bit is that you mentioned Lauren's lost some weight. Like your kitty, my Katie, who was playful to begin with, became even more active and started losing weight. She was the same age as Lauren at the time and seemed perfectly healthy otherwise. Bloodwork done during a check-up revealed she was hyperthyroid. It's a serious condition that requires treatment. If Lauren's not had a thyroid test, have it done, just to be on the safe side.

Hopefully everything will turn out just fine and you can enjoy Lauren's playfulness!

My 12 yo has been much more active and playful the past 6 mos. I have no idea what's going on, but I'm happy that she's feeling well enough to play, jump around, and act like a kitty. She has some health issues, arthritis, cataract forming in one eye, and some kidney problems, but is very healthy otherwise. I would just encourage you to check with your vet regarding the weight loss. It's most likely just because she's moving more and being more active, but better safe than sorry.
