I have 2 cats that are on medications for the rest of their lives. Of course those are the 2 with the most sensitive stomachs and they vomit occasionally after their meals. Does anyone have any idea on how long medications like prednisone or antibiotics take to be absorbed into their systems after you administer them?

Muddy just vomited about 10 minutes after he got his prednisone pill. I don't want to give him a second if some of it was absorbed. Thoughts, other than call the vet and ask them in the morning (it won't hurt him to wait 12 hours)?

Every medication is different. You'd have to look each up, and even then you'd probably find more information on their use in humans. Liquid meds will absorb faster than pill.

But, it's very likely ten minutes was not enough for pred. Off hand I would guess it takes closer to at least 30 minutes in pill form.

With tablets it's usually closer to 30min- 1 hour. But even if he essentially misses one dose, I think it's best to wait until morning and consult your vet rather than giving it again.

That was my guess also. He blocked last week and they gave him a depo shot then, but said to restart the pred in a few days. Depo can last a few weeks, so I'm not overly concerned about him missing a dose of steroids, it's just that its pred and know that has to be given at regular intervals or weaned off gradually.

Thank you!
