I want to clean my cat's teeth but they fight it every time. Is there something i can give them that's safe that will keep them calm while i hold them down to clean their teeth?

I've been brushing all my cats' teeth for about 8 years now and have never had such a bad reaction that I needed to calm them ahead of time. None of my cats are crazy about me messing with their mouths, but it was just a matter of them getting used to it and becoming resigned to the fact that I would win this "battle."

Start slowly by getting your cat used to you putting your fingers in his mouth, preferably with something tasty and make it a pleasant experience with lots of praise. Then gradually introduce the toothbrush.

Good luck!

Thanks! I have a problem specifically with one. The little fella has mild stomatitis so its harder since it may actually hurt his gums. I started slowly and it worked for a bit then he went mad. But i guess it will be an everyday task getting him use to it and making him realize i wont hurt him.

Thanks once again

I use Oxyfresh Pet Gel instead of a brush now. I used to use the small cat toothbrushes, but have had better results with the gel which works on the gum inflammation and can be applied with just your finger. Maybe that's an option for you.

I am using a gel also I dont think its called OXYFresh though.
I just apply to my finger and go over her teeth. It just says should
be done 30 mins. before or after eating, prefer at night a couple
times per week for maintenance.
I think a toothbrush is a lot to ask from a cat. Also you could just try
your finger first then maybe gauze or bounty paper towel for a little
roughing action. I just started myself again in doing this every week
and its going pretty good I must say. Be patient dont torture the
creature on the first sitting. Do a little more each time.
