The vet said he does not know of anything that will lower Coco's calcium.
It was 14.5 and is 12 now.
Anyone know anything that can lower it?

Well here are the things that I learned while dealing with Jordan's Hypercalcimia. I forget if your cat has CRF or not, but some treatments probably can't be used with a CRF cat.
First, is your cat on Lactulose or Enulose? My vet denied it, but I truly believe that was the reason for Jordan's Hypercalcimia. Otherwise here are the things I know of and tried most of them:

Diet: CRF diet
Sub-Q fluids
Prednisone (probably not recommended for a CRF cat)
Then there is another injectible med, it's like Calcitrial, or something like that.

Those are the things that come to mind right away. I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

Thanks,
Coco does have Crf and used to be on pred and Depo Medrol shots but they caused her bladder problems.
Coco can not be on Lactulose because the vet said it will make the calcium levels go up.
Coco is on Renal Food and gets Sub-Q's every other day.
I can ask about the Calcitrial.

I'm glad to hear that your vet knows about lactulose & calcium levels. My vet refused to admit that it was possible. The eye specialist also felt the lactulose may have played a part in Jordan developing cataracts. It upsets me to think that vets are perscribing this stuff stating that there are no adverse side affects when experience tells us other wise.

You said that Coco's calcium already went from 14.5 down to 12. That's a big jump did you do something differnt that may have helped?

Her calcium was 14.5 last Jan and 12.0 last week.
I do not think anything I am using can help your cat because it is for crf.
Coco gets fluids,Azodyl,Aluminum Hydroxide,Miralax,Norvasc for high bp ,Baytril to prevent her bladder infection from coming back. She also has pepcid a/c.
Coco had Lenticular Sclerosis but her eyes are ok now.
I think the high bp caused it.
I wish the vet would be able to help you more.
I have another problem with Coco today.
Her asthma is acting up now so i will have to give her a inahaler treatment.

This was interesting to read. I am on Calcitriol for low calcium. It's activated vitamin D to help with the absorption of calcium. I wonder if it's the same type for cats? If so, that wouldn't do what you want it to. Lowering calcium is very difficult, most humans have surgery to correct this problem. I do know that phosphates interfere with the absorption of calcium, that's my only suggestion is to have a food with phosphates in it.

Maybe I have it confused with something else, but Jordan has a diagnosis of idopathic hypercalcimia. The vet told me there is an injectable medication that is supposed to work to lower blood calcium for 6 weeks. I never tried it because the price was prohibitive (I want to say about $350 per shot). Prednisone worked for Jordan, but Coco's CRF is probably the reason for the hypercalcimia.

I am afraid that the complexity of Coco's health issues will make it difficult. Jordan's problem was differnt, but if I can remember anything else I'll let you know.

It is complicated with Coco because she has other problems.
I wonder how many cats have high calcium?
Thanks for the help.

Cleo had slightly elevated serum Calcium levels. We tested her Ionized Calcium levels and PTH. Since those were normal, and her serum phosphorus levels were within normal limits, we started her on the Calcitriol. She gets 24 nanograms, every other day. Her serum Calcium levels are now within normal limits. Her last bloodwork was 10.9 (7.9 - 11.3 mg/dL). I think her highest was around 12.

Do you think I should have Coco's levels tested?
The vet did not mention anything like.
Do you have any idea why her levels dropped from 14.5 to 12?
I am glad something works for your cat.

If it went from 14.5 to 12, it is lowering... I am not sure why the vet is saying he doesn't know anything to lower it?? If it is lowering now, and you are still doing the same things that might have helped to lower those levels, isn't it kind of right to expect that the levels might lower some more? Or does he need to lower much more, and much faster? Sorry, just needed to ask

I will say that I have read in various places that blood calcium tests are not super reliable and that it is not unusual to have a high reading that is false. Or if all of her kidney values were off, it would make sense that her blood calcium was high. After 2 years of dealing with hypercalcimia about the only thing I've learned is that vets don't know much about it and it is somewhat unpredicatble.
