Brief History:

I had surgery on April 7th....(I mention it because it can play a part in a cats behaviour, seeing their human in pain)

Kizzy was neutered on April 16 (9 months old).

Behaviour change #1: Over the last couple weeks, but especially since about 4-5days ago, Kizzy has changed.

He has become sooooo loving, constantly craving attention if he is not sleeping..... climbing onto my lap when I am on the computer (something he doesn't normally do).... everytime you turn around, he's flopping on the floor for belly rubs, anywhere I am, he is there too. I have to be careful not to step on him.

I am NOT complaining. I am just curious if it is a normal after neutering. Aside from me having surgery, nothing else has changed in our household.

Behaviour Change #2: Within the last week, Kizzy has started to play aggressively. Meaning, using my arm to bunny kick, and nipping at me while we are playing. These are play nips, NOT love nibbles...that I can tell by the way his ears are. The nips don't hurt, but still not a behaviour I am happy with. I withdraw my arm with a firm no. He gets this "defiant look" on his face. When I think he's calmer, I go back to playing and again he will nip... a firm no, and now I move.

I just find it weird. I don't, never have, played rough with him....as I do not want that aggressive play. So to recently go from no nipping, to nipping...has me wondering.

Any thoughts would be great...whether you think its because of the neuter, or because of his age (he's 10mos on the 17th).

Thx.

Sounds to me like Kizzy needs a new buddy to play with. Perhaps another adorable lil ragdoll
I love the ragdoll in your other post and think they'd do wonderfully together

I actually decided against that kitty....yes he was cute, but after talking with someone whose judgement I trust, I decide to say no on that one.

however, I am keeping my eyes out

Does anyone else have any input? Has anyone else's male cat experienced a more loving attitude after neutering?

Any advice for the "rough play" he's been doing?

Thx.

#1 Could be because of lowering hormones. He's not maturing towards breeding and fighting anymore.

#2 Could be because he's getting older, though he should have already been old enough for the "rebellious age".

The extra loving behavior could definitely be from the neutering, and the biting could be due to his age, a "teen-ager", you know how teen-agers can be

I had a feral male that I had neutered. He is now the sweetest thing you could ask for. He is still a barn cat, but there is nothing he likes more than getting picked up and loved on. It's amazing. He was soooo feral before, and now he is like a cat that has been raised by human.

Do you know that he was a true feral? Or was he a kitty that showed up at your barn one day? I find that even lost house cats can act like they've never seen a human before. Prove to them that you're not going to harm them, and that you have yummy food, and they "remember" people quickly enough.

Just because a kitty runs or acts wild doesn't mean it's feral, it just means that it's scared. Unfortunately animal control and some shelters forget that.

makes sense
Thanks.

I have to get him back into the vet, to see if we can finally get his second shots
So I'll doublecheck too just to be safe, because its a behaviour change, and very dramatic compared to his normal loving self.

no he was a true feral. I saw her around for a couple of years, and he would bolt if he saw a human. It wasn't until he was really hurt in a fight that I could get to him. He is now blind in one eye due to the injury. that's why I grabbed him and took him to the vet. When I took him to the vets to be neutered, I told them at the front desk that he was feral, but he had never shown any type of aggression to me. The girl said the same thing, it must be a stray. Anyway, when I went to pick him up, (this is from a low/cost spay/neuter for ferals,), they asked me to go get him as he was so aggressive to everyone that they wouldn't ask anyone to put him back in the carrier. (they can't say they weren't warned). he jumped into my arms when he saw me and he has been a baby since. Ferals just like me

Yes, I've seen that behavior before as well. When I took my cat to be neutered at about 4 months, the minute we got home he came out of the carrier, climbed into my lap , rolled over and snuggled. He NEVER did that before. It lasted a day or so, then he mellowed out, but he's still very affectionate.
Also I care for a feral colony which is actually pretty tame since I've been doing it so long. When I get a young male neutered, they spend the night in the house. As I check in on them, even though they're drugged and loopy, they are SO glad to see me, they let me pet them and even get snuggly, and that lasts to a lesser extent even when they're returned to the colony.

I think it has a lot to do with you being familiar and comforting presence after a trumatic experience. (Thank god they aren't BLAMING us!) :-)

I second this. I've noticed the teenager stage start about 9-10 months old. It may just be a coincidence that you had him neutered at this time, or that the change in hormones just exagerated it.

I have two black British Bombay cats, one always got into mischief hunting all the time playful as ever and very loving he is slightly smaller than his brother who was never that playful as a kitten, he was loving also though..

They use to play fight alot.. Hercules would always take it to far

At around 1 year and 6 months hecules started going out alot more, fighting and shagging I'd assume!

Micky become very attached to me, never went out as much.. But still playful

Hercules had two bad abysys on him, he needed stitches so we had him neutered (snipped) as well.. To much fighting id assume..

Now he's still loving doesn't go out as much and is actually playful now..

A week after having him neutered i had my other cat micky done as well but since it..a week later he's very quiet, now hercules is back to full fitness and still likes to randomly attack micky, micky always held his ground..

Since having micky done he's scared of Hercules and very quiet not playful anymore , hardly eats and sleeps alot..

Still very nice to me but obviously not the same.. Is this because he's been neutered and lost his fight against his brother who is only wanting to play half the time now anyway..

Took him to the vets, they couldn't find anything wrong, but he's not the same anymore. Neuterd at 2 years
