What could be wrong with my cat?

My 11 year old neutered domestic short hair is very ill. He's in the "kitty hospital" on IV antibiotics for a very highly elevated white cell count. In the past two days, doctors have drained over 2 liters of fluid from his abdomen! He's refusing food and is dehydrated, but other than the WBC, all the other values in his blood work are good. No FIP, feline leukemia or any other viruses...no fever and no masses or tumors can be seen on x-ray. All his organs appear intact and normal. My baby has stumped all 3 of his doctors! Does anyone have any similar experience with their cats or even any guesses as to what may be wrong?

I have no guesses as to what's wrong, but I pray everything gets better for you and your little guy.

Perhaps you meant FIV....there is no test for FIP.

Here is an article which may give you some additional information on this condition. (if you get an annoying popup there, just press Ctrl and N to get a clean window)

As well, I'm sending you a private message with a suggestion...as someone who has been through this, I have every appreciation of the frustration anf helplessness you may be feeling.

What color was the fluid? Have they discussed doing an ultrasound? An ultrasound allows for a better picture of the organs in three dimensions and can often be more useful than an xrays (xrays tend to be done first to rule out certain issues and because they are cheaper).

Doesn't elevated white cell count mean some sort of infection??

Get better from Cammy and me!!! Keep us updated too!
