There is this guy I work with who has a golden lab. This guy knows how amazing my Bruno is and sometimes asks me for advice on how to train his dog. Of course my advice never works because we only use positive reinforcement with Bruno, we never yell at him, or hit him, instead if he does something bad we firmly say “No” then quickly give him something he is allowed to play with and praise him like he did the most amazing thing we have ever seen when he plays with it. Bruno has never eaten or played with anything he is not allowed to for very long with this method.

This guy said he tries this but then gets mad and yells at his dog, he says sometimes he gets so mad (like the other day he ate his 10$ wallet) that he yelled at him about three times, at different times that day. I tried explaining to him if you use my method, but yell at him, it wont work and you only confuse the dog. Of course, he doesn’t get this.

Anyway, here I go at a long story again. Yesterday I was hosting a social committee function at work that requires me to be friendly with everyone to keep spirits up (we are downsizing and went from 300 people to 90) so I had to talk to him. Of course I asked how his dog was doing and he told me that he is doing well, is still eating things, and he’s worried he will eat his bed when they go away. I told him not to worry that I am sure the dog sitter will watch him…. He said there was no dog sitter…. His neighbor will come over once a day to feed and let him out….. I asked how long he will be gone…. He said 10 days!!! I looked at him and my mean side came out and I said “real nice, no wonder your dogs screwed up” he got mad and defended himself saying he cant afford a sitter blah blah blah, I asked if he was joking, he said no, so I told him that dogs were social beings, they cant be shut in a small bedroom for 10 days straight and I can guarantee that his dog will never be “fixed” if he does things like that. My boss came into the room at that point and called me over so that was the end of that.

I cant believe it…. Who leaves a dog alone for 10 days!!

Poor dog. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy comes back and finds the dog destroyed all sorts of things out of boredom and loneliness.

This is entirely why people should have to have a license to own a dog.

Poor, poor dog! What an idiot! People really need to understand dogs before they go getting one!!
I was walking a friends dog a few months ago and their neighbor had this GORGEOUS collie. Pretty young, I'd say a year old at the most. Well a girl about 11 was walking her and she (the collie) got very excited and wanted to say hi to Samantha (the dog I was walking) and the girl had trouble controlling the dog. A few minutes later I hear her in her yard SCREAMING at the dog and hitting it. The dog keeps getting in her face to lick her. The girl didn't realize...this is submissive behavior. The poor dog is saying "Okay, I'm sorry, please stop yelling at me."
She said "DO YOU THINK I'M PLAYING?!" and kept pushing her away. Now, I know she's just a young girl, but she more than likely isn't just behaving this way spontaneously, she learned it from her parents who are idiots too!

Oh my goodness, I'm sorry. I just get really mad. I wish I wasn't such a chicken, I would have said something. I know I should have.

That is why i think some people should not have dogs. In my spare time i look after other peoples pets when they go away. I recently had a girl come over to my home with a huge staffordshire pitbull and a english bulldog and lets just say these dogs were from h-e-l-l. She let them bark like there was no tomorrow, grabbed and blew in the bull dogs nose, played fish hook with the dogs mouth, pulled their lose skin and booped them on the noses and some other horrible things and to top it off she wants to breed BOTH of these girls this summer and all i can say is i wanted to go off on this chick. There are to many unwanted puppies and dogs because of the way people treat their dogs oh and i also loved the part if you leave them locked up they chew your dry wall. I never contacted the girl again after she left.

There's no place like home
So it sounds like this dog has separation anxiety issues to begin with, and he is leaving him alone for 10 days? That is so incredibly stupid!

Leaving a dog alone for 10 days without proper care could be considered animal cruelty. I would notify the local humane society or SOMETHING, people need to be educated on how to have animals. And if they can't take care of them, they shouldn't have them. Especially dogs, though. They are extremely social creatures that thrive with attention either from a doggie friend but most especially from their owner. I am appalled to hear about this person!

Ugh. I'm just a little older than that, and I can't imagine treating an animal like that. >> Her parents should know better than to scream at a poor dog.

Really, if it were up to me, I'd take that guy's dog away and give him to someone who will actually make sure he gets treated right. *grimace*

While reporting this guy may be a good idea we need to think about the OP here. She has made it very obvious that she disagrees with what her fellow employee is doing to his dog and if she were to do anything, even anonymously, she may be at risk. He can get or maybe even has her home address and/or phone number and he's known to have some temper problems.

While what he is doing is wrong, please be careful! I would hate to hear of you being harassed or worse because you've done the right thing.

I dunno, don't be too hard at the guy for yelling at the dog :\\ sometimes it's easy to get frustrated and yell at a dog for something even if it won't help them understand.

Like when our dogs knock the trash can over, we yell and curse about it because damn it cleaning up trash is disgusting.

so if a dog ate a wallet, especially if there was important junk in there, yeah, I'd probably yell out of frustration, too. Sometimes it's easy to forget that yelling doesn't always help.

But if he has someone coming over once a day to see the dog, it's not THAT bad is it? I'm sure the person will play with the dog if he's friendly (which he prolly is) and all, and he's gonna get to go outside.

Gone for 10 days, and someone only coming over once per day??? Not only will everything be chewed, but it will all be urine and poo stained too...to no fault of the dog...

The owner needs to have someone come over no less than 2 times per day, otherwise that poor dog will only be pottied ONCE each day, which is neglect.
