Yesterday I thought Jordan had a hemotoma in his ear. He needed to have his blood calcium rechecked. So I thought the vet should take a look at teh hemotoma as well. The vet said it is very small & called it a seroma. My mom used to be a nurse & she said the differnce is a hematoma is filled with blood a seroma is filled with clear fluid. The vet opened it up & said she does not think it is worth doing surgery at this point. She told me to keep an eye on it and if it gets worse then it may require surgery.

Then we talked about spots Jordan has in his eyes. His regular vet had just wrote it off as him getting old. This vet was more concerned and recommended I take him to a feline opthomologist. She feels the spots are cataracts due to his hypercalcima, but also stated that she is not farmilar with the type of cataracts he has. So I will give them a call next week. I'm a little worried about how much this will cost, but if it can give an answer to all the various problems he has it will be worth the mone.

Now the long stand large issue of his blood calcium. His regular vet was not sure he would ever be off the pred but I wanted to try. 2 weeks after being off the prednisone completely. His blood calcium is ........... NORMAL!!!!!!

So awesome about his calcium level! Woohoo!! Also glad that this vet seemed more concerned about his other issues and is sending you to a specialist.

The weird thing about prednisone in humans is that the prednisone affects your calcium and makes your bones brittle if you're on it long-term. When my husband has to take pred. because of his asthma, the doctor always has him take calcium supplements as well to protect his bones. Wonder if it's any different for kitties??

I think it is probably the same because Jordan's problem was that his blood calcium was too high & the prednisone was used to get his blood calcium down because elevated blood calcium does a lot of damage.

Well poor Jordan is off to see the vet again on Friday. I will be taking him to a eye specialist to figure out what the cataracts are. The vet said it was probably his hyprcalcimia, but the quick look up I did showed that there were associated with hypocalcimia.
