Cheesing is real?!

I just watched the South Park episode from last year about "cheesing" and out of curiosity, searched the web on the topic. Between a brief "acedemic" episode (internship) where I was exposed to criminal law and just about everybody in my family being a doctor, I thought I had heard about it all as far as weird ways to get high (but never tried any of it - I've always been 100% clean).

Anyways, a web search revealed that the episode is oddly based on a real recreational drug somehow created by concentrated dried cat urine.

This is beyond bizarre. Out of curiosity, what is the chemical found in cat urine that has neurological effects on humans? The only article I could find referencing the term "cheesing" refers to a heroine (synthetic opiate) based substance. I can't imagine that there is some opiate type substance in cat urine.

well, from the little bit of information I've found, you'd have to smoke it or inhale it in some other way that it would be concentrated and absorbed into the blood just like psilocin (4-Hydroxy-N,N-dimethyl-tryptamine), the chemical in " 'shrooms " that is responsible for its neurological effects.

I don't watch South Park so I don't know what references they made to the drug Cheese. I don't think the actual drug called Cheese has anything to do with cat urine though, if they're talking about the same kind. The drug Cheese that made headlines recently is heroin-based, mixed with OTC drugs like Tylenol.

yeah, that's what I found online too. Apparently though, the idea of concentrating cat urine for the purposes of utilizing it as a recreational drug is based in reality. I don't know what the name for it is in real life though.

It's definitely up there on the weird scale.

Somehow, I am not surprised that people have tried using cat urine as a drug.

I just don't see how you can get high off of cat urine, though, especially concentrated. I would think the effects of ammonia in the urine would be too toxic for a "high" to be possible. It seems to me a person would pass out before they could get high from concentrated amounts of ammonia. But then again I have no idea what the chemical make up of cat urine is.

Now this is something you don't hear about every day
I was quite surprised when I read the first post as to what 'Cheesing' is..and now I know. Not something I would try though I must admit!

There's no place like home
It's Southpark. I bet they made it all up simply because they do far out, unbelievable things.

(and yes, I watch the show and have seen that episode a couple of times)

Detox is sort of my area of expertise and I've never heard of cheesing. That's not to say it doesn't exist...I did not know until I took a continuing education class that Robetussin cough syrup was being used as a street drug. I guess if someone keeps trying, eventually they will find something to give them a cheap high.

Somehow this smacks of the rumor when I was in high school that you could get high smoking dried banana peels. Yeah, sure.

maybe. There definitely seems to be very little information on the subject. I stopped looking after a while.

Of course, all the kids were convinced you could get drunk drinking Coke and aspirin. Can you say, "Excedrin?" I knew you could!

Excedrin is caffeine and asprin. The caffeine somehow increases the analgesic qualities of aspirin and/or acetominophen.

I assume the coke and asprin thing was referring to the caffeine in the coke product?

As for the cat urine being used as a recreational drug, while I too find it hard to believe, there seems to be evidence online that it has at least been tried with some success by some people. Whether the "high" that was experienced was the result of a real chemical reaction, or entirely psychosomatic, I don't know and am not planning to find out.

I would think it would be the toxic effects of the ammonia in the urine, but it's like mushrooms, it's actually a 'poison' to get our body to respond and who wants that! I for one will pass, if South Park started smoking dog turds it wouldn't surprise me that people would try it!
