I am an 23 year old college student studying biology and looking for another job. I would really love to have a career working with animals right now because once I graduate I am planning on caring for animals for a living. What types of animal-related jobs should I look for right now? I need positions that do not require previous experience and only require a high school diploma. Also, are there any programs out there that prepare individuals for animal-related careers that take less than 2 years?

If you are in sciences, have you thought about vet school? There are differeing programs but it is a wonderful career!

You could volunteer at a Rescue or for a vet and they eventually might find you a paying job. That is how many people find work. While studying at vet school, I worked at the school's ER Vet Hospital and also at a rescue. You could contact the municipality and ask them as well though those are usually not "GOOD" jobs in the sense that most communities have a ill policy once they are full. However...volunteerism usually is what ends up helping you to get into the really good jobs.

^My understanding is that veterinary schools are generally harder to get into than medical schools and even more competitive.

You could look into being a vet tech. Most vets will just train you on premise so that shouldnt be too hard for you to get in. It really depends "caring for animals" is an extremely vague field. That could range anywhere from petsitting to becoming a vet. You could try to find a dog daycare or a kennel in your area and start there. That what got me into looking into dog training. Thats another option: training. You could go into behavioral studies but you do need to have a degree to actually call yourself a behavorist. Maybe look into a dog walker as well?
I think mostly you need to narrow it down to what you can make money at and what you want to get into. If picking up dog poo isnt your forte then you may want to go more towards the vet part but if that doesnt bother you, for me working at the daycare has been great!
