Our 2 year old male cat has started hiding in any small corner of the house, hes an insider, wanders out rarely, hes always been very "vocal" - talking to us, but hes quiet now, been off his food (unusual for him) but has had a small portion just, and done a whoopsy, then off to hide in a wardrobe, whereas he would usually flop down on our bed or the sofa, hes purring when stroked and his nose is wet, any ideas? wife did use a carpet shampooer/cleaner yesterday but think he started this before then. hes not been sick, and his stools have been normal. thanks in advance

Hiding and not eating like usual are signs of a very ill kitty. Please get him to a vet as soon as possible.

My kitty with chronic pancreatitis showed just those signs when he is starting to get an attack.

Lots of other things can cause such a reaction, severe pain from any source is one.

What do you mean by "done a whoopsy"?

You really should get him to the Vet ASAP for a proper assessment. Cats are notorious for hiding pain and discomfort and by the time we start to notice they seem "off", they're really in a great deal of discomfort. Cats are also notorious for 'hiding' when they're feeling unwell. The fact that he's quiet now, too, that's significant. Kitty needs a good check-up and sooner than later. Something is definitely going on here and he's counting on you to please get him to the Vet. Don't let this go any longer. The key to most conditions or health issues is early diagnosis and prompt treatment.

after 2 days hiding in any corner he could find (inc a wardrobe and behind a desk) hes eating well again, purring, "talking" to us (hes the most vocal cat ive ever known, always has been), sitting in the window looking out and trying to get past us out the door, which he does, then turns and runs back in. hes never had a night out (not much point with his "tackle" being at the vets somewhere. still not taking over the bed like he was but doesnt seem distressed, he does have a habit of trying to eat indoor plants or flowers in vases, dont know if thats any connection. oh, and he sleeps on his back with his legs in the air, not very elegant

(whoopsy = dump, No2, king richard, poo)

It could definitely be - many MANY plants are toxic to cats, and should be removed from the house pronto. Please take a look at this thread and see if your plant is on the list. While you are at it, you can also see other common household items that can harm them, to better kitty-safe your house.

hes back to normal, sleeping at night on the sofa, during the behind my desk, snoring - so i know where he is - sitting in the window (probably thinking what he would do to the large pidgeons outside given the chance), eating normally but not now trying to kick our bedroom door in all night, which is a blessing, i suppose cats have off days the same as we do
