Scotty (my big baby---he'll be 9 in May) has a swollen eye. All around the eye is red and swollen, his eye is running copiously, and he keeps sneezing. The conjunctiva is quite swollen around the outside of the eye.

I took him to the vet today. I was especially concerned because Scotty's mother had a swollen eye least year, and it turned out to be an abcessed tooth, a real nasty infection. The vet looked Scotty over with a black light (he thought the red swelling around the eye might have been fungal), took his temp (normal), and prescribed Terramycin eye ointment. He thinks it might just be irritation, some litter in his eye or something. He thought maybe one of the other cats scratched Scotty, but he says there's no evidence of a scratch or puncture wound. He says that if it doesn't look any better in a couple days to come in and get antibiotics, but he doesn't think it's systemic at this point.

I don't think it's a URI because the other cats aren't showing any symptoms. Last time a URI went around, all the cats were sniffling within hours of the first cat showing signs. I suppose his sneezing might be because of the eye discharge running into his nose.

He's eating, drinking, and playing normally. But his eye sure looks bad! Poor Scotty.

So, any other ideas? Has this happened to anyone else?
