When my cat developed scabs down her back, the vet suggested a allergy trial. I went and bought some Natural Balance Green Pea and Duck dry and canned and fed it for 2 months. She never showed improvement, and started getting worse during the last couple weeks. I made another vet appointment and switched her to California Natural Chicken and Brown Rice dry. The lady at the petstore recommended it as a limited ingredient food to try. After 5 days on that she started showing some improvement. Her scabs were drying up and some were falling off, but she was still itchy. So, I took her to the vet anyways and they gave her a steroid injection. They said that she could be allergic to the peas or the duck. I feel like such a dope for ordering all that NB Duck off petfooddirect, when that might have been the cause this whole time. The shelter is going to be happy with such a large donation of food.

Now, I'm looking for some canned food options with only chicken and/or rice as the main ingredients.

At the petstore I found Evanger's Organic Braised Chicken. The ingredients are:
Organic Chicken, Organic Chicken Broth, Organic Chicken Liver, Organic Brown Rice, diCalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Organic Guar Gum, Organic Blueberries, Taurine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Niacin Supplement, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Thiamin Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Biotin, Folic Acid, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K), Zinc Proteinate, Ferrous Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Calcium Iodate and Sodium Selenite.

It has blueberries, so I'm not sure if it would be an option to use for the next 8-12 weeks. I didn't see any By Nature Organics at the petstore (another petstore where I used to live had that). I think Kroger might have the Brandon Farms 95% meats, but I'll have to check there today. I can also order a case of canned food from petfooddirect.

California Natural does make a Chicken and Rice canned as well. I also feed my cats the California Natural dry but I have given up on getting them to eat wet food. I do think the canned has herring in it which the dry doesn't but other than that I think the ingredients are the same.

I'll probably order some of the By Nature Organics 95% meats from petfooddirect when I get a good coupon code. This time I wont order so many cases as I did with the NB. I would prefer a canned with the same ingredients as the dry.

Ohki has had struvite crystals, and high PH in her urine. I am trying to do the allergy trial, at the same time avoid anything that would cause urinary issues. I bought her a Drinkwell and she likes it much better than the Petmate fountain. I also use Distilled water in the fountain, because our tap water is very hard. I think the distilled is better for her to drink, and it will keep the Drinkwell from getting that hard water build up.

I was using distilled water in my Drinkwell as well, but members here suggested I try regular drinking water instead. I do buy bottled drinking water for the kitties, and that also seems to help keep the Drinkwell clean -I change out the water and clean every Sunday.

On the other hand, I've seen anecdotal suggestions that distilled water is great for kitties with crystals - I just don't think anyone has done any clinical studies either way.

Good luck - what we do for our kitties!

Just an update. Ohki is completely scab free now. Her fur grew back, and she feels soft again. I'm going to stick with the California Natural Chicken and Brown rice dry, with Evangers classic chicken canned for a while before I try anything different. And if I decide to try something different I'll be sure to only add 1 new thing at a time and observe closely for any allergy symptoms.

I guess I spoke too soon. This morning I found 3 little scabs on her back. I'm trying not to get too disheartened by this. After 6 weeks on the new diet her scabs went away and now they came back. I don't know if it's just because the shot she got 6 weeks ago wore off just now, or if she got into some people food, or the dogs food. I'm going to treat for fleas on everyone in case that's the problem.
