Guess it goes both ways as it is human nature to be a hypocrite I guess.
That would seem to be where you keep mixing it up.
I don't know of a cause held by either the right or the left that is extreme. It is how that cause is observed, promoted and pursued that can often be considered extremism. Look at the man that recently killed 3 police officers and ranting that he was afraid Obama would come take his guns, which he had acquired legally at various gun shows.
Gun rights is a very just cause in the US, protecting a basic right and to maintain possession of symbols of liberty. BUT...if that cause is taken up by a psychopath, then that cause becomes a root motivator for extremism. The right to life is a just cause, held sacred by many people. But, when a preacher murders an abortion doctor and his bodyguard, and suggests at his execution that anyone that is anti-abortion follow in his footsteps, then that cause has become the root motivator for extremism.
The left has always acknowledged that their causes are misused, or at the very least, pursued with too much enthusiasm. Take the Symbionese Liberation Army in the 70's for example. Racial equality was a just and noble cause, but the SLA were merely murderers and thieves, but they flew that banner, and may have actually had a "noble" intent when they started. But they were radical and extremists and the left knows it was done under a liberal cause.
But, in the case of right wing extremism, the rights attempt to impress their own values onto the cause instead of vice versa, and anyone that promotes their favorite causes in an extreme manner are "not really" this, or they are "not real" that's, like they think it will invalidate the extremists motivators or excuse their causes from any blame. Like it or not, right wing causes can, and do, promote extremism just as much as those of the left. It's the adamant right wing denial that I find so funny.
