I realize the point about his word has been addressed numerous times in this thread - that just shows the importance of the disappointment.
It was all over the media
- that the Obama's were getting a dog
- yes, they kept their promise to their daughters - good for them.
But, the media promoted the idea of them getting a dog from a shelter.
I doubt anyone here thought anything else because that was what was allowed
to be promoted in the press. Otherwise, when the press started spreading the news about them getting a dog from a shelter someone would have corrected the statement if it was wrong - don't you think? There sure were a lot of questions directed to Obama, he had ample opportunity to qualify what the press was reporting.
In this case, it was not just a "promise" of a spouse - they simply let the story ride for good press - at least that's what it looks like now.
And, to your question about holding someone accountable for a spouse's promise - "No" - is the answer.
However, Michelle did say "we
" - and, her statement was justly taken as she was speaking for her family - guess Michelle has a problem - she's learning that her word doesn't hold water - as in Portuguese Water Dog.
P.S. I can argue on the side of the Obama's, but, for the sake of this particular post - I'll wait until another time.
