Oil-dri for litter?

I read that you could use Oil-Dri (the commercial stuff they use in garages) for litter. Doesn't it have additives? I was worried that the cats might absorb something from it.

If not, it looks like it might be a really cheap alternative - it's 40 pounds for about $8 here. With six indoor cats, that'd be a steal compared to what I'm using now (A&H unscented). Any thoughts?

I don't have any experience with Oil-Dri so can't comment on that product. But, I do know that at least one member here has used Dry Stall (click here ---->Dry Stall Info) so that might be an alternative to consider.

Oil-Dri is the company that makes much of the litter on the market. In fact, kitty litter has additives; Oil-Dry doesn't, so far as I know. However, it won't be a clumping litter.

We used to pick up cat litter all the time at the Oil-Dri factory.

The first guy to sell kitty litter was actually trying to find an alternative use for what we know today as Oil-Dri!

I don't think I would use the stuff. We are using the wood stove pellets and its only $5 for 40lb bag.

It's what my Dad would buy for us to use before all the fancy cat litters were developed.

That's cool! But I was thinking like with everything else, "modern technology" would insist that the tried and true must have something added. So is the additive to kitty litter what makes it clump? I guess I better read the box!

My guys insist on the A&H non-scented. I've tried the pine, the newspaper, the corn and the wheat. They do not like them. We clean often enough that we don't need scented. In fact, we bought it once by mistake and I thought we'd be run out of the house!

From what I've heard, clumping litter was due to a mistake at Oil-Dri's manufacturing plant. Apparently a batch did not get baked as long as it should have. Rather than complaining about the defect, buyers wanted more of it! Of course, that may be urban legend, too.

As I've said, I've been to Oil-Dri's main plant in Alabama a number of times.

That's so funny, I never knew about something called Oil-Dri, I honestly always thought it was just actual cat litter dumped on oil spots in garages and roads!!
