Should taxpayers pay for free legal help for family law cases??

It's asked of me almost everyday. Someone who needs legal services for a divorce or child custody matter gets mad that the public defender doesn't help them (unless they're a "deadbeat parent" who might get put into jail for contempt of payment orders, then they get a public defender ).
The State of California has already provided a Self-Help website: www.courtinfo.ca.gov. do you taxpayers feel that the government should be providing more assistance?

I think it should only matter in cases where a criminal act has occurred (e.g., kidnapping, abuse, etc.) leading to the divorce or child custody case. But that reasoning could lead to other issues and stipulations. I'd make a horrible law-writer.

Actually, you're right on the money - the system does work like that - if the act is criminal, the district attorney's office represents the alleged victims and the public defenders rep the alleged perpetrator. so, you see, we might just need to elect you to Congress
