La Marseillaise?

In another thread, someone mentioned it might be time to change the lyrics of Maryland's state flag.

But it looks pretty tame compared to the French national anthem:

Allons enfants de la Patrie, \t
Arise, children of the Fatherland,

Le jour de gloire est arrivé ! \t
The day of glory has arrived!

Contre nous de la tyrannie, \t
Against us the tyranny's

L'étendard sanglant est levé, (bis) \t
bloodied banner is raised, (repeat)

Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
Do you hear in the countryside

Mugir ces féroces soldats ? \t
The roar of those ferocious soldiers?

Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras \t
They come right here into your midst

Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes ! \t
To slaughter your sons and wives!

You think maybe it's time to re-work these lyrics, too?

How about:

Rule Britannia!!
Britannia rules the waves!!
Britons never never never shall be slaves!!

I think that's kinda cool.

The French national anthem reflects the French Revolution, which was indeed extremely cruel and bloody. The words are tame compared with what really happened.

Actually my real opinion is it's kind of silly to change the lyrics. That's like rewriting history.

France tried to take the French Revolution on a European tour. That didn't work out too well.

Ya, and Hitler tried the same thing with the same results. Seems he didn't study his history when he was in school.

And speaking of European national anthems: how about Germany's which is still "Deutschland, Deutshland, über alles" (that's not the actual title, just the first line)

Actually, it's not. Only the third verse is the official national anthem.
Quote:
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit Unity and law and freedom für das deutsche Vaterland! For the German Fatherland Danach lasst uns alle streben Let us all strive for that Brüderlich mit Herz und Hand! In brotherhood with heart and hand! Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit Unity and law and freedom Sind des Glückes Unterpfand; Are the foundation for happiness Blüh' im Glanze dieses Glückes, Bloom in the glow of happiness Blühe, deutsches Vaterland. Bloom, German Fatherland.

Tricia is correct. (She ought to know )

I got my information from this website:

http://german.about.com/library/blmus_deutschland.htm

which lists the lyrics of all the verses, the lines I quoted above from the first verse, and I overlooked this statement in the commentary:

Quote:
In May 1952 the third stanza was proclaimed the official anthem of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) by President Theodor Heuss.
Sorry about that, but you can see how that can happen when you're in a hurry.

Thanks for the correction.
