I have two 9 month old cats. I recently started feeding them canned catfood. How many cans total should they get per today and also should I feed a small ammount of dry food with that? And lastly, is it bad to feed them meat scraps?

My mother in law's cats grew up on a farm and they fed them everything and she scoffs at me when i won't give them milk. sigh, so this is why I have conflicting ideas about what to feed my cat.

The recommended amount is 1/2 to 1 ounce per pound of body weight. My boys who weigh about 9.5 pounds eat about 4-5 ounces a day. No reason to feed dry.

It's not bad to feed them meat scraps--just make sure the meat scraps aren't seasoned, as things like onion and garlic aren't good for cats.

Ask your MIL how long her cat lived

A canned food diet is a healthier diet for your cats than dry food but many of us feed both. I feed wet morning and night with 1/3 cup dry left out for snacking during the day/night. We also give Bijou a little bit of whatever meat we are having for dinner. He gets his own plate beside my hubby's chair.

Farm cats and pets are 2 very different things. Who knows if those farm cats had diarrhea, parasites, fleas, tapeworms, etc.! We also had farm cats and they certainly did not live as long as our pets.

Most cats are lactose intolerant so you are right not to give them milk. Sounds like you are better informed than your MIL. Keep up the good work.
