OK, I'm up after a short nap. I got in at 4 a.m. this morning from a trip to Hattiesburg and Jackson.

Nope, never been into that (raised in a fundamentalist type church that was against it).

2. do you have any piercings? aside from the ears.

Not even my ears. When I started trucking, other truckers would have pulled an earring out of my ear!

3. Have you ever held a snake? If so, did you enjoy it or were you uncomfortable?

I have, as recently as a couple of weeks ago. It was a little snake that Dottie found under her rose bush. I love the way they feel, but I wouldn't keep one as a pet.

4. What is on your MP3 player right now? (or cd player, whatever fits)

Don't have one. Does that show my age? But it would be golden oldies and classic rock.

5. How many tvs do you have?

Two in this house that are in use, although we watch them very little. I have a couple more "truck TV's" around the house.

6. What is your all time favorite bought chocolate?

Ah, some form of Swiss dark chocolate. You know Swiss milk chocolate doesn't taste like American milk chocolate?

7. Whats your favorite colour, least favorite colour?

Ah, probably red of some shade, depending on what it's used for. My hot rod is technically "metallic red," although I call it "dusty rose." I've never seen a color that didn't have some good use.

8. What's your favorite movie?

Support Your Local Sheriff. The Music Man. Old stuff like that.

9. What's your favorite book?

"Foundation," by Isaac Asimov.

10. Have you ever been anywhere on an actual holiday/vacation? (not counting any work trips?

All over the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Europe. Went to school for a year in France. Have been on something like 22 cruises.

Vacations, mostly. And almost every western Caribbean cruise stops at Cozumel.

Not much. I can read just enough of it to get in trouble. My college degree, however, is in English and French.

I have some around. I like Conjunto, especially.

Love it. As does Dottie. She had never eaten Mexican food before she was engaged to me, but she loves it now! Hey, I'm there eating everything that ends in -o or -a. Except maybe menudo.

Only in a margarita (invented in Dallas, according to Playboy magazine).

1. How long have you been driving truck?

I started almost 32 years ago. I haven't done it all the time; I've quit about 5 times, swearing I would never again drive one of those nasty, smelly, smokey, greasy, noisy things again. But I kept ending up there. It's the last bastion of the American puritan work ethic, where the government has to pass laws to keep drivers from working too much. It's all I've done for about the last 20 years, though.

2. Do you just go through US or do you make international trips?

I have been in all 50 states, but I only drove to 48 of them. I have been in most of the provinces of Canada, too.

3. Does your wife ever come along?

From about 1990, until about 3 years ago, we spent most of the time driving as a team. Even the cat came along!

4. Have you ever gotten into an accident?

I was in my first accident when I had only been driving for about 3 months. I was in the sleeper berth, and the other driver jackknifed the truck on a rainy road up in Oklahoma. Never been hurt, significantly. I have not had an at-fault accident since 1991. But we've been hit by three drunks and two girls who didn't know how to drive in that amount of time.

5. What kinds of wildlife have you seen in your journeys? (trucking, not vacations)

Oh, all sorts. When we were doing a dedicated run from Dallas to Laredo to L.A., we saw all sorts, including koatis and javelinas. I've seen elk, moose, buffalo, deer, coyotes, pumas, bobcats, possums, raccoons, and a bear or two.

6. What is a typical week like for you? (I know some drivers who work M-F, then spend the weekend at home...then back on the road)

Since I drive for a Toys R Us distribution center, most trips are out and back, and the farthest we go is to Slidell, LA. Our week starts on Monday evening. We usually do one or two "local" trips, which is everything up to and including Houston, San Antonio, Lubbock, Midland, Tulsa. Throw in a couple of short ones to the Metroplex area, and usually one layover, which means it's too far to get back in our legal 11 hours of driving so we have to sleep in the truck.

7. What's the most interesting trucking experience you've had?

That would be a tough one. We hauled explosives for the military for a couple of years, even had a secret clearance, so that was interesting. There was a lot of waiting involved in that, so we got to visit a number of interesting places, such as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, etc.

8. Do you ever pick up hitchhikers?

Not any more. It's illegal and it would cost me my job.

9. Do you enjoy trucking?

It's the best bad job or the worst good job you've ever had.

10. What colour is your truck?

Our trucks are white. By the way, white is the only "free" color on a truck, which is why so many are white. Any other color costs extra. A lot extra. My last truck was a dark metallic blue. The one before that was "dusty rose," the color of our hot rod.

If I came to visit you in Texas, what would you take me to see?

Depends on when you came, and what you were interested in. Dealy Plaza in Dallas, where Kennedy was assassinated, probably. Right now, I would take you south to see the bluebonnets and other wildflowers. We have a great amusement park, 6 Flags Over Texas, but you've seen one amusement park... If you came in October, I'd take you to the state fair. If you're into country music, we could go to Billy Bob's.

If you came to visit me in Chicago, where would you want me to take you?

I've been to Chicago; I'd have to let you take me somewhere you thought was special. Someplace for pizza, though!

What was your favorite event of your childhood?

Winning a trip to see the drag races, and winning a trip to see the USAF Academy play against the Russian hockey team at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. (I grew up in Denver.)

When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

Never got that focused.

What two things could you not do when you were a child, but you can do now?

Eat out, and go on vacations.

What was the first job you ever had?

Well, the first official one was working for a beekeeper.

What was the worst job you ever had?

Maintenance/janitorial work in college.

What's one thing you're really talented at?

Writing. Or at least I used to be.

Ella loves strings. Sterling likes the feather toy. And Punkin has a thin scrap of cloth, about 36 inches long, as well as a favorite koosh ball.

2. Where is their favorite place to sleep?

Punkin sleeps on the dining room table. Ella sleeps on the knitted afghan on the bed. And Sterling sleeps wherever the sunbeam is.

3. Do they like catnip and/or catnip toys?

Yes, all of them do.

4. How many cats have you had in your lifetime?

Many. But my mother didn't believe is spay/neuter or taking them to the vet or keeping them indoors, so they mostly died young. Dottie and I have had 6 in our 35 years of marriage.

Truman used to love to play with the sheets while we made the bed.

Mostly dry, with a little wet meal morning and evening.

"Plastics." Actually, it was a tossup between "Study Chinese" and "Learn how to fix automatic transmissions." I didn't take either piece of advice, and I regret it.

Rock, but my taste is eclectic. I like big band, classical, folk, etc.
