Words No Longer Used: Terrorism, War on Terror, Enemy Combatant

Thread Starter
Isn’t this getting a little bit overboard, even for Politically Correct terminology?

They are no longer “Enemy Combatantsâ€. I don’t know what they are, but they aren’t that.

It is no longer Terrorism, but a “Man-Caused Disasterâ€

And we are no longer engaged in a Global War on Terror (I guess because they aren’t terrorist acts anymore?). It’s an “Overseas Contingency Operationâ€

Critics have pleaded with the Obama administration to abandon the use of "Global War on Terror" because they say it mischaracterizes the nature of the enemy and its abilities.
Um, what?

They can coin another word: "Obama-speak"
How about I call it anything I please?

Stupidity disquised as political correctness is still stupidity. Absurdity would probably be a better word.
I think I will start using those words on a daily basis now.

A man-made disaster is a building that collapses due to shoddy construction. A terrorist is a coward who kills people for whatever warped cause their feedle little minds can come up with. Not the same thing.

Enemy combatant and unlawful combatant are good enough for the Geneva Convention so they're good enough for me.

I can't say I'm sorry to see "War on Terror" discarded, but wouldn't it be simpler to now say "War on Terrorism" or "War on Terrorists"?

ok, so let me get this straight.

Terrorism = Man-caused disaster

am I right so far?

now, under assumption that "man" in the above statement does not mean only men, but also women...

My daughter's bedroom is a man-caused disaster.....

so her room is terrorism now then eh?

Exactly, according to their lack of logic.

I'm waiting for them to say that the terror.....I mean the man-caused disaster watch list is politically correct because it isn't fair to man-caused disasters (or would it be disasterers?)

Politicians are proof positive that stupidity knows no bounds.

I agree, but I wonder......do they get stupid after they get to Washington, or were they already that way when we elected them to go there?

The "dumbing" down process must begin before they get to Washington, it just happens to accelerate the longer they are there.

On a side note, I drive a forklift for the USPS. I want to now be known as a mail pallet movement technician.

You better not; your supervisors will think you're serious.

This is ridiculous... But I also hated when the Bush administration called torture an "enhanced interrogation technique"..It was all annoying euphemisms at one point when Bush was trying to make the war more popular...
So they're just trying to do the opposite now ..
I'm not really annoyed by it, I just don't see the point. There are quite a few words and phrases in use today that could stand some clarification, or perhaps altered a bit for a more precise definition, or even a new word in conjunction with the old to add specifics; but why start changing everything?

It's all propaganda IMO. Not for clarification, more so because they want to induce a pleasant feeling in the ignorant masses while they hear of something that they are trying to implement and the opposite for something they are trying to get rid of....
I am doubtful of whether this actually has any effect on people, besides annoyance and confusion.

Question - Just what, "ignorant masses" would you be referring to?

Congress? Politicians in general? I can't think of folks who are more ignorant than they are.

I was referring to what politicians think of as "ignorant masses" - people they need to persuade in order to get their votes/approval ratings So me and everyone else who isn't an influential person in political and social life

Hey, I knew what you meant and you're right! According to politicians.
Yes, according to politicians.. I should have put it in quotes. I was actually a bit sarcastic when I wrote it, because we're obviously not all ignorant...

And politicians have a phrase they use to condescendingly refer to us "ignorant masses" -- they call us the "chattering class"
