My cat is now 8 months old and has recently been spayed. Up until she was a few months old she was absolutely fine with her litter tray but she then started to poop in two other places (by the door and under the desk). Before she was spayed it was every couple of days I'd discover a new poop on the floor but now (since being spayed) it's 3 or 4 times a day. The vet suggested changing her litter to wood based but this hasn't worked. I've also tried squirting lemon juice over the places where she normally goes to keep her away but with no joy. I also thought it could be a lack of attention (it seemed to happen when my boyfriend was round and she wasn't getting as much attention as usual) but now she does it all the time, if we're in or out. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? I'm running out of ideas!

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Have you tried Feliway spray or plug-ins and the Cat Attract Additive (or the Cat Attract litter?)

Feliway is a synthetic hormone that mimics the "friendly" markers in cats' cheeks. Either get the plug-in (like an air freshener we can't smell
) or the spray. If you get the spray, use it every 3 days. Just make sure you do not place the plug-in or spray anywhere near the litter boxes or where she's supposed to scratch. http://www.catfaeries.com/feliway.html

As to the Cat Attract additive, it has helped so many people with kitty pooping or peeing behavioral issues: http://www.entirelypets.com/catattract.html

I see you're not U.S. based. I don't know if these sites ship outside the US or Canada, but at least you know which products to search for. I'm pretty sure both are available there.

The other thing I would consider doing is replacing your litter box, and if you're using just one box, get a second one. Some cats are really picky about clean boxes, that's one thing. Other cats to not like to pee and poop in the same box, so having two boxes available for one cat can sometimes take care of the problem. The other issue is that IF she was constipated or had diarrhea or something at one point, she may have come to associate the box with that problem. Replacing the box - meaning it will smell differently - along with adding a second box - can sometimes make the difference.

Thanks for that LDG, I'll probably try another box first, given the amount of people food she's managed to steal in the past, it wouldn't surprise me if she'd had some kind of 'digestive problem' that she now associates with the tray.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I think LDG covered the bases pretty well - you mention talking to your vet, but if it was just general advice, and the vet didn't examine the cat, that's something you might want to try, in case there is some physical problem.

Also, cat's sense of smell is much better than ours - so just because people can't smell where she's gone out of the box, doesn't mean she can't.

You may want to give your floors a through scrub with an product specifically for breaking down cat pee etc.
