My cat has acne located on his chin.

From what I know, the chin is the most common place for acne.

There's a few things you can do:

- if you use plastic dishes, switch to stainless steel ones. The plastic can sometimes cause the acne.

- if your kitty eats wet food, wipe his chin after eating (just with a damp cloth or cotton ball)

- wipe gently a couple times a day (just water) to keep it clean.

- gently clean the area with diluted peroxide if it looks infected

- if it does get really bad, the vet can give antibiotics to cure up the infection.

-my vet said I could put a little bit of Polysporin on it after cleaning.

The main thing is trying to find the cause of it and eliminate that cause if you can. It will usually clear up on its own if not caused by environmental reasons. If it is caused by environmental, you have to get rid of whatever is causing it, then it will go away.

I hope that helps some.

I think that acne on the chin and by the base of the tail is usually a food allergy and is usually caused by grains in the foods

Food allergies can definitely cause acne, too.

Also Rigel, dry foods contain a lot of oils in them, so make sure you change the dry food bowl daily.

Interesting thought
Do you have any links to research that backs this up?

I feed grainfree dry but cheap wet food (that's what he'll eat) on occassion (maybe 1-2 times a wk) and it does have wheat gluten in it.... But I would think if it were an allergy, he would have had it the entire time he's been fed grains.

anyways, I'd love to read more on this topic if you can point me in that direction.

Glad to see the improvement Rigel. Wet food is better than dry for your kitty Rigel.

I believe the best way to avoid acne is to make sure you don't use plastic dishes or even a plastic mat under the dishes, and to wash the water and food bowls after every use.
