My cat gave birth to 4 kittens 4 days ago. She had 2 boys and 2 girls. The boys coats are pretty rough and kinda stick up while the girls coats are really smooth. Is there a reason for the different feeling coats?

It could be that the "rougher" looking ones will have longer hair, but it's hard to tell until they get a little older.

That's what I was thinking...

What are mommy and daddy? Could they be carrying longhair?

Tessa is a short haired tuxedo. she is a foster so I have no history on her or the Daddy!

Its possible they could be indications of medium or longer hair. Mom and dad could have the longhair gene as recessive. American SH types tend to have a little harsher coat then some other breeds/mixes.

Ling is mixed shorthair and while her hair is nice and shiny, its on the rougher side from the American SH in the background. Charlie and Jack are very shorthair pedigrees and they have very soft silky fur compared to Ling.
