Pope says condoms are not the solution to Aids - they make it worse

With the recent debates we've had about religions, I thought it might be useful to bring it up.

Here is what he says:

"traditional teaching of the Church" on chastity outside marriage and fidelity within it had proved to be "the only sure way of preventing the spread of HIV and Aids".

I feel like pope Benedict is so much more traditional than the late John Paul. I think there is no hope for the catholic church to progress after seeing the things pope Benedict has done so far. I find it crazy that he would claim condoms make it worse. All of those kids who have been born with aids and get older and get married, may be virgins and can still spread it to their wives and children... With the way the population in Africa is growing, given their conditions of poverty, they need condoms not only to protect themselves from aids, but just so that they stop having more children IMO. I don't think it's right to be creating kids who will die of starvation and suffer through the pain and discomfort of malnutrition...But of course, they are all well aware of all of this and it all just boils down to Vatican politics....They are all so obsessed with their rules and structure, that i'm sure they don't stop and ask themselves "what would jesus do"..

Not only that, but he made sure to do this in Africa, which has the highest % of HIV infected people... I was raised Catholic, and these kind of things pisses me off. BTW - both Popes share their disapproval for condoms (and all other birth control method, for that matter), but I am not sure if Pope John Paul would go as far as saying that condoms make the problem worst.

That's the thing- I kind of get how having sex only within marriage can limit hiv from spreading (not stop it from spreading but just limit) -although I don't agree condoms should be banned b/c of that, I see how it's technically possible. In the US, Europe, yea, I buy it. But not in Africa. There, the instances are so many, that so many kids are born with AIDS that i just don't see how it's possible. And then there is the fact that it's dangerous to even attempt to discourage condom use there IMO because not every single catholic is always free of sin, so there will always be people who have sex outside of marriage. The church knows this, that's why they allow people to repent, so they understand that people are sometimes sinful and it's okay as long as you repent. One could even claim, that in a sense by telling them not to use condoms, the church is dooming them to AIDS, which kills them.

I think this highlights what I said in another thread about the Catholic church starting to regress to the old ways. I'm sorry to see it. I thought they were making some headway shaking them off under Vatican II and the last two Popes.

ummmm, wow.

I just can't believe some of the statements in that article.

Ignoring that it was the Pope saying it...but for anyone to say condoms are part of the problem of HIV, I just don't get it.

Just because you give someone a rubber, doesn't mean they are going to go out and have sex.

Many studies have been done on condoms... No, they aren't 100% effective against anything, but they do work. Nothing aside from abstinence is 100% effective in preventing aids via sexual transmission.

It is crap like this that makes me glad I don't touch organised religion. The only reason I'm posting is because the title caused me to go "HUH"???????

Just more nonsense from the Catholic Church. Totally unbelievable. Someone needs to try to talk some sense into that Pope. I have no idea what century he thinks he's living in but it sure isn't this one.

I don't think he has a clue how much harm he has done by even speaking that out loud.

Of course, this is no more ridiculous than the President of South Africa saying that HIV does not cause AIDS.

Like all such diseases, social attitudes make it very hard to attack it in a rational manner (and that includes the U.S., which refuses to use contact tracing to help cut down on the spread).

Medieval attitudes towards sex and stds are what allowed the AIDS crisis to get so out of hand in the first place. Continuing to push those idiotic beliefs on people is... well, it's wrong, to put it far too gently.

Pope needs to SU, and the same goes for all the others out there that share similar views about condoms, STDs and abstinence.

It is so scary that this sort of attitude would exist in this day and age. Will anyone be foolish enough to listen?

I'm not particularly religious but my parents are and even they can't believe the way that newer priests are now behaving. There is one in their parish who has really extreme views and refused to marry a couple who were living together. He stands on the pulpit going on about how evil homosexuality is etc. They reckon it's all coming from Pope Benedict.

They are apparently taking the Pope's statements to heart in Paris.

Though to be honest, "pro-condom activists" just isn't a statement I really have given any thought to ever hearing.

I think what he said was taken out of context.

I think what he mostly means is that chastity outside of marriage is the only thing that will protect you from AIDS. Condoms do not prevent aids and don't necessarily protect you from aids. I think he was just meaning that in a way condoms make it worse because people use condoms and think they are protected from everything and they aren't.
