This is the darndest thing. It's freaky, at least to me.

My dear nearly 16 yr old big orange kitty Taco 'crossed the bridge' a month ago (cancer). He was neutered as a kitten, of course. Over the past few years he had this weird habit of almost 'mounting' my spayed girl Spookie; he'd be chatting away with her, they'd be chattering away back and forth...........he'd then run up to her, almost standing over her (on top), grab the scruff of her neck in this teeth......she didn't seem to mind.........at least for the first 30 seconds LOL. It wasn't like he was trying to hump her or anything......at least not from 'the back end' but it seems to me that this would be how cats "do it". I don't think she minded. Sometimes I'd have to break them up because he wouldn't release her scruff from his mouth and then she'd start to whine.

Anyway, I adopted a 1 yr old male orange cat a month ago. I see a lot of behavioral similarities to Taco (they look rather similar) which is uncanny but neat.

He was an easy introduction to my remaining 4 older spayed females. He took to them better than they took to him. They'd hiss a bit here and there, but now everyone is just fine.

Last night Spookie was on my bed and so was Hobee (new cat). Next thing I know he's on top of her, has her scruff in his teeth, just like Taco used to do............no attempting humping going on (LOL). He was neutered Feb 10, by the way. She didn't seem to put up a fuss.

Why would another male do this to her? Is she just so enticing? LOL If he'd have tried this on my other females, they'd have cleaned his proverbial clock in a heartbeat. Spookie is a little more skittish and less aggressive/more compliant.........so did Taco and now Hobee do this because she seems submissive?

What the heck do they do this for? Assert dominance? Just 'sexual instinct'?

Puzzling!

Chip attempts this on occasion w/Pixel. she's the only one he'll try it with - he's rarely successful [she hisses, etc. runs away] but he keeps trying it every once in a while.
he was neutered when i adopted him [altho i suspect he was neutered as an adult] & i've had him for 3 years, so there aren't any hormones still around.

It can take 2 months for their hormones to settle down after neutering. Usually it is dominance behaviour if they are fixed, my boys & girl all 'mount' each other at times.

Wellington does it with Biscotte all the time - I think it is both affection and dominance in his case. He does actually thrust at her but of course can't do anything. She doesn't seem to mind at all, even purrs sometimes. But Milo has now started trying it with her too, though not ever with the other girls. With him it is just dominance and she doesn't like it, but rolls on her back and fights. I don't know why it is only Biscotte that gets this treatment, though I did see Persil swipe at Wellington once and he never tried again. None of them would ever dare with Alpha Dushka.
