Twitch is toothless - basically, I had a stupid vet & she was literally within inches of death when I got a 2nd opinion. 5 years later - and no teeth - she's still as cranky as ever!

I went to the expensive vet around here - it was $250 for FeLV/FIV test & full dental extraction for Twitch. Cow had a full extraction, blood panel, distemper/rabies shots, & FeLV/FIV test last Christmas for $250. Keep in mind I'm in a rural area.

Basically - he's a purebred - and if not well bred, IMO, going to be a money pit for life. A lot of people will give me flack, but taking Twitch's teeth & Cow's is the best thing I ever did - I wish I had done it at 7 months for Twitch when her teeth started to get bad when she was spayed.

Twitch also has borderline renal issues, due to me letting her teeth get so bad. Watch carefully how bad his teeth get - as it is likely already impacting his internal organs.

ETA: re-read the thread carefully, I'm glad you found a vet to do it cheaper!

Got Back from the vet, and I am so worried fro Bugsy...
His gums were bleeding today. The vet said he does need to be on antibiotics, but that the dental will not do anything for him. He has Immune Mediated Gingivitis. It is basically an immune response to his own teeth. I have two options:
1- Be on regular (probably monthly) cortisone for the rest of his life
2- pull all his teeth off.

He said that yet not common, the use of cortisone long term could result in Diabetes, liver and kidney disease.

He was very sweet, and said that the option is really mine - having the cortisone is safe for most cats, but some will have problems.

Does anybody have had a cat with similar problems? Any cats on cortisone long term?

I decided to go ahead and give him a shot today, and think about it. He is probably going to be on it until I have a job, so I can afford the surgery. I am not really comfortable in risking having these side effects... He said that his gums should improve considerably in the next couple of days, and the effects should last about a month. The shot was Depo-Medrol 20mg.

I am freaking out a bit right now; any input is greatly appreciated, and so are vibes.

I hope your cat feels better.
Yep, my vet told me the risks - he said they are not common, but side effects can happen. I don't have the $$$ for surgery right now... I don't know what to do!

That is what makes it hard.
You will have to give the Depo Medrol until you have the money.
Coco got lumps from it that would last two months but they did go away.
Sorry you ahve a cat that has problems.

If his health issues are directly related to his teeth and his teeth will have him on meds the rest of his life, with probable side effects on top of that. I would have his teeth removed. As Natalie said her, Twitch had all of her teetch removed and his doing fine.

I hope he feels better soon.

I agree that if it's a choice between permanent meds and pulling his teeth, I'd have the teeth removed. We'll likely be making this choice with Cotton before too long. He still has a few teeth left, but years of no care whie he was feral have left thier mark. Cotton always improves after he's had problem teeth pulled.

Good luck, and plenty of feel better for Bugsy.

Many for you and Bugsy, Carolina. My sympathies. I truly hope everything turns out okay for you and your precious babies. I agree that if it were me, I would do the cortisone until I could afford the surgery, then I would have his teeth extracted. I have read many great stories on TCS about people who have kitties with no teeth, and their kitties do just fine. He would probably be happier without those teeth to pain him.

Good luck.

Thank you guys for all the vibes, advices, and hugs!
I was going to take him to the dentist today, but I decided not to. I don't have the funds to do the procedure anyways, and he is already so traumatized with vet visits and meds, I decided to not do anything else until next month, when he needs another shot.
I ordered Transfer Factor today, and also started mixing his antibiotics to his wet food in the morning, which I hope will work for the whole time he needs it (it worked today).
He is also on L-Lysine and missing Link - I am going to do all I can to keep him healthy while I can't do the procedure. I do, however, want to take him to the desntist for a 3rd opinion. The dentist doesn't charge for a consult, so I am going to do that before I take him to the vet for the second shot.
Poor baby - I just want him to be ok....

I honestly would pay another vet for another opinion before I would decide with my cat.......Just being straight up as they come here.

I already got a second opinion... I am going to take him to the dentist for a third opinion, but not to another vet... The dentist doesn't charge for a consult, so that is good

I'm sure the few cortizone meds will not do any damange, it's not going to be for his entire life, only until you get the money so I wouldn't worry too much about that..
Many vibes for Bugsy to feel better
