I was wondering what the difference was (as in the look) of acne vs herpes sores?

I noticed a few "rough" areas on Kizzy's chin when I was petting him. Probally 5 or 6 on his chin, a couple are up near his mouth.

I did notice he was drinking alot out of my dogs water bowl, which was plastic so I switched it about a week ago to a stainless steel bowl.

You can't see the sores just looking at him, you have to spread the fur to see them and they are ummmmmm....reddish bumps with a white/beige crust on them and black specks. I wish I could get a pic but that's not happening.

Does anyone have any pics of acne or herpes sores? Thanks.

For what you are describing, it sounds like acne. I was given the advice to clean the area 2x/day with a solution of diluted hydrogen peroxide.
Lucky had an episode of this, and Bugsy has a LOT of those black specks - I call them kitty black heads. It is important you clean them out, as it supposedly can get infected, which is likely what'/s going on with Kizzy.
Herpes starts with a blister, and once it bursts, it creates a scab...
Good Luck!!

I have 3 cats who have a history of feline herpes virus but never have they had any "sores" and no vet has ever told me that herpes virus in cats can manifest itself this way; that herpes virus mostly causes an upper respiratory infection and can cause ulcers to the corneas of the eyes.

Does anyone have a link that confirms that feline herpes virus can manifest itself in cats as actual "sores" / blisters?

sorry, no link - anecdotal evidence, tho.
when i took Pixel to the vet for her sores, the vet suspected herpes. she was treated w/Viralys gel [& nothing else - no cleaning or any other treatment]. the sores dried up & went away.
since then, when she's developed similar sores [usually w/the introduction of a new cat, btw - major stress!], i've treated w/lysine w/similar results.
i also use feliway to lower stress in the household. if i do this, plus add lysine to her diet [either w/special food or added to her water] the sores stay away.
she also occasionally gets a bump on her chin [pimple-like] & blackheads, but never at the same time as the other.
the herpes sores look more like open sores - like scratched open mosquito bites on people, to some extent, or like human herpes sores - cold sores or fever blisters. they don't look anything like the 'pimples' or blackheads, & they also don't appear in the same areas.

Great pics, thank you all for the info and posting the pics.

I'm thinking its acne, perhaps from drinking out of the dogs plastic bowl because he didn't have them before (that I noticed) when he was drinking out of his own bowls.

Based on the pics, the sores do not look like the herpes sores, they look more like the acne pic only in a lesser degree.

I'll be doublechecking with the vet though when Kizzy goes in for boosters. I just wanted to have an idea as to which it was, if I thought it was the herpes, I'd take him in prior to his boosters.....acne I am willing to wait till his appt.

Thx again everyone.

I'm also quite concerned about lumps/sores on my cat. I've uploaded a post about it, so check my profile. I'm afraid what my cat has is feline herpes. Ugh.
