Hi

Next week I'm getting a 5 month old kitten, her current owner is feeding her:

"For wet food I've been feeding her Purina Pro Plan Kitten formula, and Purina Pro Plan Kitten Select formula, and sometimes Wellness Kitten formula. The dry food she seems to like is a mixture of two foods together: Royal Canin Kitten formula, and Wellness Kitten formula."

From what I've read, the Purina Pro isn't quality food so I'd like to get her off of it. Do you think I should switch her over to all Wellness wet food? I've read the change should be gradual, so I'm assuming I'll need to buy the Purina Pro anyway. Or can I just buy the Wellness because she has eaten it before?

Since I don't have any kids or pets, it's ok if the food I switch to is a little pricey.

Any advice is welcomed, I'm a little nervous and excited about my first kitty baby.

Thanks!

For wet food I've never had to do a gradual change, but kittens can be a bit more touchy, I suppose.

If the dry is the same I'd think you could try a number of different wets... I dunno if you want to leave her on a kitten wet, though.

I'd definitely keep her on her usual diet, at least for a while, when she first comes - think of how many new things she'll have to cope with, so why mess with the food right off the bat?

And congratulations! It's so exciting, and worrisome, when you have that little one in your house and she looks to you for everything good. You'll get there - just give both of you some time to adapt.

I personally would start her off on the same wet & dry foods. One at a time slowly then change foods. Any change in a kitties life is hard on them - and IMO it's easier to keep them on "junky" foods to start with & slowly change over one food at a time than to risk the digestive upsets that go with a quick change.

Sounds like the person has fed a variety of foods (a good thing), so it should not be a problem to just pick out one of the better ones and feed (canned and dry).

I just got our new Oci (5 months old) and had to pick up a few cans of Fancy Feast (as that's what the breeder was feeding as well as Blue Buffalo).

Since my guys have to be on Royal Canin for Urinary (dry), I had to just put in a few crunchies with the FF for the first few meals. I also feed in canned - Wellness, Blue Spa, Max Cat, Iams, Avoderm, and Natural Balance.

So Jack's now getting a mix of FF with the other canned food to change him over to what the others are eating. So far, so good - firm stools and no throwing up.

By the time he's done the last can of FF, then he will be getting the same food as my other two.
