So soon! But at least you can get this over with and out of the way. That the surgery goes well without complications. Make sure to let them know if you feel any pain while in the hospital.

I wonder why you got such terrible breaks? Are you calcium and Vit. D levels good? It might be worth asking if there are any supplements you should take to help give your body what it needs to heal - but clear anything with you doctor first.

I know I've been extremely lucky that the worst I get from falls is sprains, bruises, concussions, and knocking myself out a couple if times. If you think walking around on ice is a bad idea, running across very smooth concrete with puddles on it is downright stupid.

For a sucessful surgery and quick recovery.

Tip: When the swelling is gone much much down the road, some of the screws they put in might start to be annoying. Mine I could almost feel by touching them with my fingers and it was uncomfy with shoes on. DON'T have them removed unless it's absolutely necessary. Gawd, what a horror story! I had 6 removed with only a local so they could 'dig in' and it was very painful! I asked the doc why he didn't deaden my leg/foot or put me out and he said quote, "would you have had it done if I told you ahead of time it'd only be a local?" NO WAY!!! I still have the plates plus 1 screw he couldn't get out. I also still have the titanium screws in a bottle lol

Tip 2: Have someone bring you dinner while in the hospital. I don't know about anyone else but whoa, their food stinks!

Aw, Mary, that's too bad. It's good that they can get you in so quickly, but it's bad that it's so serious. I second having someone bring you dinner--and a pair of earplugs probably wouldn't hurt, either.

Mega-vibes coming your way!

The ortho said we had to operate right away because the break is unstable. When I broke it the bones were displaced and had to be set and held back in line, and he says that if I accidentally put ANY weight on my foot it would cause it to pop back out of place and cause even more damage.

I haven't been checked in awhile but I do take supplements everyday already. The doctor seems to think its just a case of bad luck on this one. I am a serious klutz (sp?) so I take falls and trips pretty regularly normally with no or only minor ill effects. Apparently this break was caused by my instinctual attempt to catch myself with my other foot when the right slipped, then the left slipped too and all of my body weight landed on the ankle.

My parents will be with me all day at the hospital - all three of them (Dad, Mom, Stepmom) and have promised that if the doctor says it is OK for me to get something delivered, they will bring me the food of my choice. There is some concern I may be on a limited diet after due to the meds they have me on, but hopefully not!

Ok so surgery is today and I have to go in at 9AM (its not quite 6AM here now). I woke up and can't go back to sleep because I am very nervous. I have never had surgery before and am very concerned about this one. It doesn't help that my last dose of pain meds was before midnight and I am not allowed to take any more before the surgery!

Thanks to everyone who has been keeping up, it makes me feel better to know some people (even if I haven't met them!) care!

Good luck with the surgery!

I'm surprised they sent you home with a broken ankle that required surgery. When I broke mine I was taken to the ER where they set my ankle and put on a backslab cast. I was admitted to the hospital and put on the "scramble list" for emergency surgery. It took 4 days to get me into the OR during which time they wouldn't feed me, and I was in hospital for another 3 days after the surgery. I was sent home with a plaster cast and after a month they put on a fibre glass one, but it was a non-walking cast too. I wasn't allowed to put any weight on that ankle for 3 or 4 months.

vibes for your surgery

my friend fell on ice this winter cleaning off her car and broke her wrist. Your boss kinda seems like a jerk and i hope he feels bad, if he would have just believed you and let you stay home you would have been fine.

also- did you make a complaint to your apartment building?

I missed this thread! First of all, big OUCH!!!!

Many strong vibes for your surgery and recovery! And a tip I learned from a doctor about pain medication: it's a lot more effective to take it before the pain starts than after it hurts enough that you feel a need to take it. I know you don't want to take it, but its only temporary and you won't get addicted to it with the attitude that you have about it.

Hiding from my SS!
Hello to all - I am back home now so I thought I'd stop in and tell everyone I am OK. Please forgive if my typing is bad or I don't make much sense, I am still on a lot of pain medicine.

My doctor claims my surgery went better than any other surgery of its kind he has done before, but it did take longer than expected. I was taken back to the OR at 11:30AM on Saturday and the doctor came out and told my parents I was out of surgery and into recovery at 2:45PM (I was expected to be out before 2). He told them someone from the recovery department would contact them shortly to let them know how I was and when they could see me again, but nobody did. I felt so bad for them because I had asked the nurses in recovery if someone had notified my parents and they said yes, but it turns out my parents were left to wonder in the waiting room until 4:30PM! They eventually called the Patients Services Administrator who brought them to my room and he was not happy they had been left so uninformed!

I was supposed to come home on Sunday but I had some major swelling complications and the doctor had to cut the brace off my ankle during my post-op visit. Without the splint I was not able to go through physical or occupational therapy at all. My doctor came by to see me post-op and was the one who cut the brace off but was off work Sunday and Monday so he instructed the on-call othopedist to come back and re-wrap my leg once the swelling had a chance to go down but he never showed up. Finally he came Monday morning to tend to the issue and I was able to be released around 5PM yesterday.

I am at home now trying to recover. The meds they have me on make me sleep a lot. I just thought I'd leave an update for y'all.

That is just terrible, I hope your boss feels guilty as all get out cuz if not for him, you wouldn't have gone out that day. You are going thru so much pain and discomfort cuz you did what you were forced to and that's just not fair. I hope you aren't suffering much pain now, I really feel bad for you, take care.

Hiding from my SS!
I got a letter in the mail yesterday saying I was being terminated effective April 1st. They indicated I was being fired for issues prior to my injury but I have been told repeatedly (recently) how great of a job I have been doing well before this.

I even called my boss two days after my accident and asked if I needed to be concerned about my job (since they had brought in a temp the same day I fell) and he said point blank that I had nothing to worry about, my job was safe and to just focus on getting better so I could come back to work.

My parents and I stopped by the office the day of my first orthopedist visit to talk to them and they told me again that I had no reason to be concerned about my job.

Anyway, thats the long and short of it. Since the company is under 50 employees FMLA does not apply. So, unless I can prove they fired me due to my injury/disability then there isn't anything I can do about it.

They have stated they plan to UPS me my personal items from my desk instead of allowing my family to come pick them up and want me to mail them my office key. I'm not quite sure how they plan to UPS my office plants?

They have indicated they will not dispute any unemployment claims, sent me a check for pay through April 1, and paid my health insurance through the month of April.

Obviously the boss doesn't feel quilty at all.

I am really sorry to hear you are losing your job! You've got enough to worry about with a broken ankle! That's so sad that they can do that and get away with it. Have you thought about calling a lawyer? Your boss sounds like a
!

Yeah, what she said! That makes me mad to hear that they fired you like that.

I would look into a lawyer if you can afford it. I'm sorry that you have to deal with that on top of dealing with your injury. I hope you can at least cuddle your cats now.

Mega-vibes blowing your way that things improve dramatically.

As others have said, get a lawyer. Don't let them do this to you, it is illegal. Unless they have proof that you were doing a poor job before - ie, not meeting deadlines, write ups, etc, they have nothing to cover themselves with as far as claiming that's why they fired you.

Thanks everybody. I have called a lawyer and will be meeting with him next week. They want to wait until I go back to the doctor so we know a little more about my recovery, I go on Friday.

Good News! My kitties are here staying with me! Mom brought them last week and they have already worked out their places with the resident kitties. Mom says my apartment is awfully lonely without them, but she is very glad they are here to keep me company.

It is wonderful you are able to have your kitties with you. I think talking with the lawyer is the best thing you can do. for your ankle, and for you visit with your lawyer
