Sending a thank you note and gift to my old vet. (long story as usual lol)

Since I have moved across Canada I have realized that I took the fact that my Vet back home was totally awesome for granted. In the 3 dogs, and 10 cats (plus birds, rats, bunnies, gerbils, etc.), along with the strays and homeless we took in he was always there for us with amazing advice, for discounted prices.

When our Rottie Damien ligaments in his back leg tore at 8 months, the youngest dog documented in Canada, he gave us a 25% discount to replace those ligaments so he wouldnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t have to be put down. When my Damien got cancer he pulled strings for us to see an animal liver specialist where there was a 1-month line up and we got in that very night. When my German Shepherd Silver got arthritis he was there and went through every single option with me because I didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t want to medicate her on his own personal time. When she had an eye problem, again, no wait time for the eye specialist, we got in right away and it saved her eye. When she needed a biopsy he was the one that picked me up off the floor when I fainted from seeing all the blood and laughed with me about it to make me feel better. He was there when we had to put our babies to sleep, he was there with my paranoid calls laughing at my questions (I have called in a panic because my dog ate one small square of chocolate, he was 120 pounds, I also called when Silvers tooth chipped just a tiny bit). Also, regardless of how busy he was he ALWAYS made time for us, even if he had to stay late.

The vets here in NB are horrible, your pet could be dying, bleeding, run over, but when they are closed, or busy you might as well watch your pet die, because they wont help… I am not over exaggerating. They are so expensive, I believe they are not as educated as my at home vet as everything they tell me it seems I just read that on the internet word for word when researching myself.

Anyway, ya ya, once again I am writing a novel. My vet at home and I werenâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t really friends at all, I was just there a lot due to my many animals all that were sickly since we always took in the broken ones lol.

I have been in New Brunswick for 2 years, I havenâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t spoken to him in probably 2.5. Would it seem weird to send him maybe some cookies, wine, or a basket with a handwritten thank you note? He still knows who I am as my family goes to him and he asks how I am doing. Or should I just leave it, its too far gone now?

Not at all - maybe you don't need to go into the negatives of the current practices you see, but I'm sure he'd be touched to hear that you remember him and his practice warmly. People always hear about things they've done wrong, but it's always nice to hear about what you've done right, and how it touched people, or pets, positively.

I think a lovely bottle of wine would be great.

As for the vets in NB, as a native "herring choker", I just have to say that the general population (at least in the area I'm from) are mainly farm vets and cats and dogs are lesser animals. Farm kittens are drowned, dogs are shot when they get old and/or have any health problems. Few people even bother having cats and dogs neutered or annual vet visits.

It saddens me to no end, but trying to educate those people is like talking to a brick wall - it hurts your head and nothing is gained except your own headache.

I think sending him something would be very nice. I dont think I'd send cookies or wine but maybe a prewrapped basket or just a nice card would be a really nice gesture. I'm giving my vet a gift ( a photo that I took ) as a thank you for how great he's been and I think they'll appreciate knowing that they made an impact and that we appreciate them for being so great.

Not too easy to send wine a long distance, and since you weren't what you'd call friends, I'd be more inclined to send a fruit basket or something like that, and have the enclosure say something like, "Sometimes we don't appreciate what we have until we don't have it anymore. Remembering the great care you always gave my critters. Thanks." FWIW.
