According to a statistic my hospital frequently releases to encourage women to get yearly mammograms, it's 80% that turn out benign.
So your chances are good.

After hearing all of the stories I was expecting the worst when I had my first done, but it wasn't as bad as expected.

I had my baseline done at 35. They also found something "odd" on my film. This is very common on a baseline as they have no prior history for you. I had to go for a second mammogram and then an ultrasound.Like you, I was also terrified. The ultrasound showed no issues. I turned 40 in August and went for my first annual test in October. There were no problems with it.

My friend had her first mammogram last year. She had the same problems as you and the biopsy came back normal. She had her second mammogram this year and no problems were detected.

I wish doctor's would explain to their patients that it is normal to have extra testing done as part of your first mammogram.

I've had 3 mammograms. The first one was horrendous! The girl was brutally rough and I was in tears during the test because it hurt so much. I was left with huge black and blue bruises over my entire chest and my boobs were sore for weeks and weeks. I couldn't even wear a bra.

I had another one a few years later, and told the girl about my prior experience with that other girl. Apparently there had been many complaints about her and she was let go. This time the girl was much more gentle. There was absolutely no pain, just a pressure feeling when the breast was squished between the plates, but no pinching, tearing or throbbing pain like before.

I had the last one either last year in June or the year before. I think it was in 2007. Again, no pain at all. I am due to go again this year.

If your mammogram hurts, complain because they aren't supposed to.

Oh hon, I'm sorry you had to go through the first painful experience. Mine was fine but but they also just added heated pads for the bottom plate here and it apparently makes things more comfortable. It all depends on who is handling the "girls" how painful or comfortable it is.

AbbysMom, thank you for your post. You have no idea how that helped me. I met with the surgeon earlier this week, and it's just going to be a needle aspiration, they believe it's calcium deposits, but she also said she doesn't understand why physcians/gynos don't warn people of this after their first mammogram. The surgeon told me that it WASN'T a lump or a mass...it was just calcium deposits that formed in a group. There is a 90% chance that there is no problem, but the 10% chance be a future problem which could, over time, evolve into cancer. Hey, that's something I can deal with.

A needle aspiration is better than the biopsy since you won't be cut. The best of luck to you, I had a biopsy done many years ago and thankfully it turned out to be benign. The best of luck to you.

So glad to hear the good news!

Two of my friends had calcium deposits and it was nothing to worry about.
