Hi Everyone - I have 2 kitties - Jingles and Jangles - and am in the process of shopping for new living room furniture. Do you have any advice as to what type of fabric will hold up best with the cats? They are pretty good cats and do not scatch the furniture but they love to lay on it which obviously means cat hair to deal with. I don't mind cleaning it up but would like something thats easy to clean. Any advice??

My cats & dogs scratched up my leather chair - the micro-fiber they scratch on too. I haven't found any couch/chairs to be "superior" than the others - I keep them covered with sheets as I KNOW they will scratch & lay on them. Seems silly - but at least one thing in my house is clean when company comes over then - I just whip the sheets off the couch!

The furniture we have right now has taken a beating from the claws (although only in spots that cats insist on repeatedly scratching), but if your cats aren't scratchers, the fabric doesn't seem to hold hair. I have too orange cats though, and beige furniture, so a black cat may be a different story.

I don't know what the fabric would be called, unfortunately. It's not a basic fabric or microfibre, suede, leather, or the likes. It's more of a woven fabric...upclose you can see all the little stiches, and the pattern is sewen right into the weave. It's not soft or smooth like most furniture fabrics...when you run your hand along it, you can feel the fine weave. We inherited this furniture, so it's not new by any means, but it's not ancient either (like the '70s couch that was still going strong when I abandoned it upon graduation from university).

I'm glad you asked this question. I was going to ask the exact same thing a while down the road when it came to buying new furniture.

My parents have leather with two dogs and it's good for not holding hair and dirt easily washes off. But, I don't know how well it will hold up to cat claws, even if they are not directly scratching it.

I have a microfibre couch and Trout doesn't even touch it with her nails
This is the only material I will buy from now on...it is a godsend!

We also have a microfiber sofa.
I wouldn't buy anything else. Lola has very rarely tried to scratch it, but a little redirection and she stops. We also keep a scratching post at each end. She prefers the posts. Plus we have our giant cat tree in the living room. So usually nobody bothers the sofa, except to sleep or play on it.
