My vet put Callie on dry m/d food. I'm reading that its better that they eat wet and not dry. For those of you who have diabetic kitties, what are yours eating? Should I keep her on the dry or change it to wet? I looked at the nutrient contents and the percentages are about the same.

DISCLAIMER:
I have no diabetic kitties

But the research( scientific) and my own( ie talking with different vets and reading ) is nearly all the same ... LOW carb HIGH protein ... for Most this is wet food as dry food is rarely low carb

Look at the ingredient list for the dry m/d (from http://www.rxpetfood.com/felinemddry.aspx - the Hills website doesn't give any details):

Chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, pork fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), pork protein isolate, corn meal, powdered cellulose, wheat gluten, dried egg product, chicken liver flavor, L-lysine, taurine, rice flour, L-carnitine, preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid, minerals (potassium chloride, calcium sulfate, salt, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), rosemary extract, beta carotene, vitamins (choline chloride, vitamin A supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (a source of vitamin C), niacin, thiamine mononitrate, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement).
Loaded with grains - just what a diabetic cat doesn't need.

I'm kind of appalled (but not suprised) that a vet would prescribe dry food to a diabetic cat. Diabetes in cats is a fairly modern disease that often finds its roots in and is exacerbated by the species inappropriate ingredients in dry convenience foods - specifically the high grain content which provides far more carbs than a cat needs. Grains are cheap and great for binding, which makes them a popular ingredient even in "premium" cat foods, but they're just really bad for cats and should never be fed to a diabetic.

I would seriously consider ditching the Hills food, eliminating dry from the menu completely and go with a grain free canned or raw diet. I know of many cat owners who manage their cats diabetes strictly with diet and have eliminated insulin dependence. This of course requires diligence on your part in providing an appropriate diet and doing in-home blood glucose monitoring (just like human diabetics), but imo the rewards - a healthy cat that doesn't need injections every day - would be worth the effort.

Have you been to this site? It's full of excellent information provided by a vet who specializes in feline diabetes. http://yourdiabeticcat.com/

realize the dry matter protein is likely close to 50-60 % , the fat 25-35%... Awesome for nearly every cat ... but very good for a diabetic
Crude Fiber Not More Than 0.5%
Moisture Not More Than 78.0%
Ash Not More Than 2.1%
Magnesium Not More Than 0.028% likely fine but a touch high for an cat with UTI issues
Taurine Not Less Than 0.10%

I will give my opinion ... realize this is not a disease I personally have dealt with outside of humans

218 calories for a 3oz?? 5.5 or a 12oz??

My understanding is look for the 10% or higher protein with 6% and above fat ... obviously read the labels ... wellness and innova EVO have complete 95% meats which would be very good

Thank you for the ingredients Anlina

THIS is an RX product so of course I say research and consult vet but here is my analysis
Chicken by-product mealICK and questionable quality , corn gluten mealThis is a PROTEIN not a carb but It should not be this high on a ingredient list IMHO , pork fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid) INDIGESTIBLE to the cat and a poor choice for fatty acids , pork protein isolateIck Isolates are usually chemically done and I have yet to find one I like, corn mealheavy in the starch and also not very digestible , powdered cellulose, wheat glutencellulose is often Sawdust and the gluten is a protein but so far no top rate proteins for a cat with issues, dried egg product the best protein but look where it is , chicken liver flavor, L-lysine, taurine, rice flour, L-carnitine, preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid, minerals (potassium chloride, calcium sulfate, salt, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), rosemary extract, beta carotene, vitamins (choline chloride, vitamin A supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (a source of vitamin C), niacin, thiamine mononitrate, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement).

Thanks Sharky.
Okay, so Callie has had previous urinary problems (crystals) and now is diabetic. What would be a good food for her? I really appreciate you helping me. Also, her sister hangs out with her so would this food be okay for her to eat, too?

Personally I would never feed ANY rx diet to a NON RX needing animal... some can be feed with some safety ( this is a vet ??
)

If you are asking about the Non RX foods YES both can eat

If I put her on no-grain, low carb, high protein diet for diabetes would that be good for her and her current problems and her previous problems with crystals. And would her sister be okay on this too? I'm looking at getting Wellness.

Talk with your vet prior to making any changes .... But IMHO the low carb would be a great place to start... If you use mostly wet the UTI issue is much less risky
