Misty is doing much better tonight, I saw her drinking water for the first time in a long time.
I think her vet might be right and she may be almost over the balance problems in a day or two.

That's great news. (Who would have thought a seemingly minor ear issue could turn into such an ordeal? I'm glad it's almost over.)

I had to laugh at Misty tonight, she was walking around with a toy mouse in her mouth and at the same time making all kinds of noise like she was calling her kittens to come and eat.
Yvonne though Misty was going goofy in the head because she is sick but I have seen her do this before. Angel used to do the same thing when she was younger, must be the mother instinct kicking in.

Its nice to be able to laugh again at Misty when she acts goofy, it was not to many days ago I was worried if she would ever be OK again.

Hi,

A little update, Misty is still having balance problems. She just fell off my dresser, I didn't see her up there, I heard a noise and a thump as she hit the floor. She didn't hurt herself, I picked her up and told her not to climb on things till she is better, like that is going to help

I was hoping she would be almost back to normal by now but she still has a ways to go. I don't know if I should talk with her vet tomorrow {Friday} or wait till Monday and see how she is doing then.

She seems to be alert and knows what is going on around her and she stumbles around to her normal resting places falling down allot on the way as she tries to walk.

The best way I can describe how she acts is like she is really drunk. She tries to sleep but I don't think she can do that very well either, she twitches and has like mini spasms.

I feel so bad for her and helpless. I hope she can pull through this and be OK but I am starting to get more worried that she won't.

Tom, Yvonne and Misty,

From what you have described through the entire post, until THIS one, I know it is now 3-7, so I don't know the latest, but I had to post!!

VERTIGO, have you ever had it, symptoms are eyes back and forth, EXTREME dizziness, VOMITING, inability to eat, due to the nausea, not able to walk due to head spinning like your drunk. IT IS AWFUL! I know this is a people disease, but IT fits!!

There is a people med that is called Meclazine. You can try to see if there is a vet type med. I know that vets DO use people meds. Until I got that med, I was MISERABLE, for DAYS. Then it was like POOF, it was gone.

The disease is just that, a FOREVER condition, but it is treatable.

I will read on to see what is going on now with Misty, but really, try this. I agree with you that you should be upset that this was not found, but it could be that you got her there BEFORE she had a chance to have symptoms, cuz your a great furdaddy, and act quick. They should not charge you for follow up visits, I know my vet doesn't

Misty girl

Peace, melissa

I still think she has a VERTIGO issue. Ask the doc. The dizziness, eyes, falling, all that.

Yes, she is doing better
YEAH! Maybe if it is possible for kitties to get this, then ask for it to be treated, PLEASE, just ask, cuz it is not fun to feel that way

Hello, Sorry I have not updated this for a while but I am glad to say Misty is back to her chubby, happy self again.

It took a long time before her balance problems to clear up. I think I am going to see if the vet will take a quick look in her ears to make sure they look OK now.

From what I can see her problem ear looks clean but I can't see in there very far. She don't act like it hurts when I try and look in there anymore.

I sure hope this ear thing is all over with.

Wow, what a load of pain for such an apparently small problem!

Oh my, I am ashamed to say I just read over your thread tonight for the first time. I would have never thought that some dark ear discharge would lead to what poor Misty went through!!!!

I am so happy to hear she is doing better, you are her
! I am sending extra just for a speedy final recovery.......

I have to deal with cleaning my cats ears and treating for mites. To clean-take a warm water soft rag and with it on your finger, gently clean ear. To have better control-put your animal on counter or table. With animal in front of your body, put your arm around the animal and hold him next to your body, with your hand by his face. Keep in mind, you have to have everything you are going to need-wet soft cloth, over the counter ear mite med with cap already taken off and within reach. You have to be slick to do this While holding him, gently next to your body and talking to him like you always do, use your hand of the arm which is pressing him against you and hold his ear at tip and gently wipe the inside of ear. May have to do several times to get clean. Keep talking to him and hold him tighter if needed.. Quickly use free hand to pick up ear mite meds and squeeze drops in ear. He will want to shake head, but take your hand,  and fold over the ear amd massage it with his head tilted to keep the meds in ear and to get it further down ear canal. Keep talking to him and let go of the ear  and pet him a few times and let him shake his ear. Reassure him. Let him go, he'll want to get away from you, but he soon be himself and he'll still love you. Do the other ear alittle later, so not to get him too upset-OR- if you get "handy enough" do one ear right after the other and then it's all done. It's all alittle tricky, but you'll get better at it and they'll soon get over being upset with you. You can buy ear mite meds in stores. I put drops in and do it again in 10 days to kill the rest. That generally takes care of it. Summer can be worse than winter. Hope this helps!

Happy to hear that!  :)  I always keep Zymox on hand.  You can buy it on Amazon---the ear cleaner and the drops for an active yeast/fungal situation.  Look at the reviews by folks.  It's an all-natural enzyme ear cleaner, and it works like a charm.
Also, I mix apple cider vinegar (the organic kind w/the "mother" included in the bottle) with water and put in an empty capsule and give to my cat (the one w/Herpes) daily along with acidophilus.  I feel this helps keep a non-yeast loving, non-fungal loving environment.

We have 3 outside barn cats. I noticed one at least has this black stuff in his ears. Looks thick and I imagine its mites. Being barn cats my husband doesn't want the bill from a vet for 3 cats. What can I do on my own? Do Co-Op stores carry anything? Or any other suggestions?
